There are no modifications to the receiver. I would like to keep the mounts design to myself until I have a final product.
If it looks like there is enough interest then I plan on being able to do the first run of them by the first of the year.
I made the one on my mini because of the high cost of reliable factory mags and did not really think other mini 14 owners would be interested in something like this until several of my friends showed an interest in it.
I've used it with 20 round ruger factory magazines, 30 round steal pro mags and 30 round non marked steal mags. With the 30 round mags you really have to keep steady pressure and momentum when stripping the third clip (last 10 rounds), first 2 clips (20 rounds) go easy and smooth. Factory 20 round mags are smooth as butter.
If you have ever used stripper clips to feed a clip fed rifle or to load magazines then you know that you need to apply firm and consistent pressure to the rear of the cartridges letting your thumb rub against the clip and following through until the last round is stripped from the clip. This consistency seams to be more important with the last 10 rounds when topping off 30 round mags than it is with the first 20 rounds or with 20 round mags.
With a small amount of practice I find it just as easy as feeding an sks with clips. I do not own a mini 30 but I imagine sks/Ak clips could be used to feed them from a similar guide.
I have a Magpul :Striplula" which feeds stripper clipped ammo into a magazine, however it only clips onto the magazine when "off the gun." it works ,,,,ok,,, nothing to write home about
i just looked at a ruger ranch and realized that it does interfere with ruger factory rings. you can not use a stripper clip with an optic mounted over the rifles action.
As I've said many times before, this is a great idea.
Many have proposed it, some have tried it, but nothing ever came from any of the attempts. I hope you're able to make this a reality -- you'll sell quite a few, no doubt.

the guide on my mini is actually aluminium. a brushed aluminium may match stainless minis pretty closely.
i can't really see a need for it to be made for anything other than a hard aluminium. there is very little force applied the the guide when stripping rounds off the clip into the magazine.
i will try to get a short video up tonight useing my the current version.
I would be interested as well. At one time a guide was marketed which attached to the reciever where the reciever cover plate is located on the left side in much the same way as the old "B-Square" scope mount was configured. The problem with this product was that it could interfere with ejection. This is based on an e-mail exchange I had with "Gun Doc". If this is not a problem with your prototype I qwould be very interested. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience. Thank you.
I only have around 200 rounds through my rifle with the guide mounted and have yet to have an issue with ejection (sample size of one). I'm curious how the guide you refer to caused problems with ejection? My fathers ranch rifle has a pic rail mounted over the action and never has issues.
There will more than likely be two versions when/if i actually produce these for sale.
one for non ranch rifles and one for ranch rifles. I'll be finishing the first ranch rifle model this next week.
Sorry I haven't gotten video up yet things have been busy both at work and at home.
Please don't get to excited yet. If this happens if will be at earliest the first of the year before I'm able to produce a product.
