Feeding Failures

So on my new thumbstock mini 14 when i go to load the first round. The bullet it self acts like it is catching on the ramp.

Is this an issue of just being a new rifle or am i going to need to take the gun down and take a stone and polish that area of the chamber. I will have to see if i can get a video to better describe what it is doing. Most of the time it is only on the first round. I am suspecting its just a new gun not past break in yet.

See if the oprod is rubbing against the barrel shroud. This was an issue with my 30. Shipped it to Ruger for a dluff and fold. That seems to have taken care of it.

May be the new mag spring is too strong and the first round doesn't come out smoothly. I had the same problem and solved it by keeping the new mags fully loaded for a couple of weeks to weaken the spring a little.

something to try

After you load the mags give the mag a good slap in the palm of your hand.
Moves a shell to the back of the mag evenly so none protrude and hang up.
Works on 1911s also.

Yup. A good whack on the back of the mag will line everything right up.

Could partially be the typical Mini break-in -- mine took a couple hundred rounds to smooth everything out, now it runs slicker than corn through a goose.

A new gun will have sharp edges on the chamber face and on the mag feed lips, some sandpaper and elbow grease will help. Mags do need a little wear in time.

I picked up an old used 20 round mag, and with some rem umc brass went and fired 80 rounds with out a hitch. I just think that it doesnt like cheap steel. I dont want to run cheap steel in it any way. So far it has been running like a top, got a bunch of friends and family getting togeather in a couple of weeks. We will see how she preforms then.
