real world accuracy

well I have been pretty busy lately I purchased a home and 40 acres of timber way out in the sticks and havent had a chance to do much shooting or visit the forums . I have decided that shooting of a bench rest at a small precise target really dont lend itsself to practical everyday shooting so I have been shooting from the prone , sitting and kneeling position as well as offhand at ranges from 25 yds out to 150 yds which would be my extreme limit of visibility with 50-75 yds more the normal shot . shooting 62 grain lake city which the military considers 4 inch groups at 100 yds acceptable I can nail a life size praire dog target at 150 pretty regular . nope I cant put every round in the eye but I can put every round in the dog and that is what matters to me. if I want to shoot .5 moa at 200 yds I will drag out my howa varmint supreme it can do it standing on its head but it also weighs close to 15lbs with the scope on it and has a 24 inch barrel . lol not to condusive to easy trail breaking here in my thick timber.
anyway I think after I sell my other house I will send my mini to gun doc for a trigger job and get the barrel threaded.

this is how she sets for the time being.

nice what scope do you have?
I got my mini-30 set up with home made strut and choate "muzzle compsenter" and vented hand
and cheap barska 3-9x
I got it down to clay targets at 500 yards on a good day.

Have him bed it while you're up there man.

That will help a lot with acccuracy too and adds almost no weight
Thats just my opinion though

Have fun shooting man!

liking the DE motif.

also, not a flame, but viperRT -

sporting clays at 500 is a little hard to believe for a mini 30.

don't get me wrong or anything - I'm not knocking the 30.
I happen to own one and I love it.
but a 500 yard shot into a 4-5" circle (around the size of a clay pigeon) with a full bull rifle cartridge (.270, 30.06, .308, etc.) out of a bolt gun is a pretty impressive shot for most folks... that's right around MOA, which is pretty tough for a mini 30 - even if the shooter is highly skilled. (again -not a flame, you may just be one of those guys that is "highly skilled" and happen to own a mini 30 that is tighter than a virgin's whoohaa and drives tacks.)

for 7.62x39 4-5" at 500 is a ridiculous shot IMHO. and one hell of a rainbow like trajectory
what is your ballistics data? handloads? mods? got any footage to back this up? I've seen some you tube footage of a guy making a 24" steel plate at 420 consistently - but it's pretty obvious he isn't holding a 4-5" group on it.

this video is here:

I should get video. All have have my cell phone but ill give that a try.

I'll get my friend he much better shot. I'm ok shot. But there is better.
I'm useing golden bear. Cheap and for most part on target. I say
8 of 10 hit.

I may just have a good mini. I have a choate "muzzle compenstor" there hand guard as well.
That made it ok for 250 yards.
Then I made a home made barrel strut. Full length and 7/8 hex aluminum.
Make it nose heavy. Good and bad
Then 3-9x scope. It is artillery the round but it repeat the out come.
With it zero at 500 I can only use it for 400-550 yard.

And no worry every one call me out. I have made a bit of money from ar guys.

Sorry mine is 581. They are made better. It look like guy in video had older one

seriously - if you are getting consistent hits at 500 at a 4-5" target with a 581

I Just gotta see it.

I'll be giving you mad props if you do.

My Mini 30 is a 581 all weather (SS) and if I do my part and shoot from a rest it'll do golf balls at 100. from a sitting or kneeling position I get tennis balls out of it I'm shooting a cheap Leapers 1-4x glass (thinking about going to a Burris tac 30) with a 1911 buffer in back, an accustrut, and a NCstar slip/pin on muzzle brake with an added drilled and tapped allen stud lock, factory 20 round mags, a Karsten Cheek rest, a Magpul AFG front grip, a flat black full duracoat job, and a Gundoc trigger job.

it's set up as a short range game gun/Defensive carbine.

is yours blued? some say that due to metallurgical differences in alloys a blued gun will hold tighter tolerances than SS

Ill be honest i hold more of a 6-7 inch. that more like 1.5 MOA from a bench. that why I'm going to get my friend. I can do god like shots once. repeating over and over is not my strong suit. Gun is better then me. but I work on getting that video.

Mine is SS factory stock and trigger. im useing pro mag 10 rounders. Im in ca honest if your hitting golf balls @ 100 yards. I bet with a better scope you could do the same.

I tryed the buffers and epic fail on mine. it didnt work the first 2 rounds then it ran last 8 ok i took it apart and there was bits of buffer every where.

39.475235,-121.616877
if you google map it you can see the range. its about 500 yards when i walk it it was like 480 google says its like 505

I didnt really think that my mini was doing that good. ruger says they do 2 moa out box. i have read most cant do that. maybe i just got lucky and got a good one. or my setup just has good synergey.

leupold is hard to beat for the money . that scope on the mini lived on my 458 socom before I got a hell of a deal on a leupold mk4 cqt 1x3 power. the 2x7x33 has took a beating and still holds zero. I can see at first light and stay until dark , the glass is clear and bright.

lol no I didnt think so , I am a foreman for a large construction company and I will be done with my current asignment sometime in november . my options will be stay with them and go to north dakota or take a lay oo and go sign the books at the union hall on top of this I am paying for two houses so until I take another call I will be in the hunker down and count my pennies mode which means no fun stuff . Trust me when I sell the house in town you and I will have a long conversation ending in me having a much better mini.
