heavy grain through a 580

Hi All, I was wondering what the heaviest grain commercial round people have put through their mini 14. I have a 580 tapered barrel and would like to use some decent sized rounds to give the red deer a hurry up I think my mini has a 1:9 twist and so far I have only put 62 and 64 grain through it but want to be sure I can bring a deer down. I have only heard of the 75g rounds but are there any bigger than that that would go through a 1:9 and still be able to hit the side of a barn
Cheers

A well placed shot will do a lot of damage, I usually use handloads 65 gr Sierra also but 64 gr are available for store bought selections. I have brought a deer down with a 55 sp in the neck.

Cheers guys, good to know They sure move at a fair rate of knots so they should do some damage. I was thinking of neck shots but need to do a bit more shooting with my mini to gain enough confidence it will hit where I point it. Don't want to hike for hours to get my shot, only to see the dirt fly up and deer scoot off and the long trudge back empty handed
Once I get into the reloading I will definitely give the handloads a go, but until then I will stick with the store bought stuff.

My 580 has a 1:9 twist barrel and it stabilizes 75grs and 77grs pills perfectly.

Try a box of Mk262 and I bet you'll get shocked.
My groups varied from 0.5-1.25 MOA.

If you cant fined Black Hills locally I have also handloaded 77smk and gotten very good results, slightly bigger groups than the factory mk262 load but only by a hair (actually just a few millimeters).

Cheers mate, I am definitely thinking of getting into reloading for my mini so if I can't source them I will give it a go. Going to the shop today for fingers and eyes crossed

Well just been to the gun shop and they thought I was speaking Martian
Looks like I will either have to find someone to import some, or as Vet/Us said, reload my own

Just bite the bullet and start reloading. I promise you will glad you did. That way you can have whatever bullet you want and you can tune a load to your rifle. Something you cant do with factory ammo.
