This past December I purchased a brand new 581 series Mini-14 Tactical (blued/synthetic stock). This is my first semi-auto rifle. I have a few semi-auto pistols and everything else is a bolt rifle or pump shotgun. After a long winter, crappy weather on days off, etc, I finally made it to the range today for the sole purpose of putting some rounds down range. I wasn't to concerned with accuracy, I didn't bring my sandbags, I just wanted to shoot it!! Did all shooting at 50 yards.
Well, after 100 rounds, it was a blast. Did not have any malfunctions whatsoever. I shot a box of Federal 55gr FMJ (BP223BL) that I picked up at Walmart a while back. I don't see this ammo on the shelves anymore.
I rotated through 7 new Ruger mags: 4 x 30, 1 x 20 and 2 x 5. I only loaded the 30 rounders up to 10 rounds. The brass mostly landed directly to my right about 8 to 10 feet. The trigger has a bit of creep, but is manageable. Most of the shots were at the level of the bullseye or lower. I didn't take any tools with me, but it looks like I need to raise the rear sight. I plan on getting it tweaked in at 100 yards with the open sights before putting a scope on it. I've always had scopes on my rifles, but I do kind of like the naked look of it as is.
I have 100 rounds of Federal Tactical AE223 that I got on sale at Cabelas for my next range trip. Will try to take my time and get the sights tweaked in.
Note: not sure what prefix this is supposed to be in, but none made sense for this post, so I chose Magazines.
EDIT: Just wanted to note that I disassembled, cleaned and assembled 3 times when I first got it, long before getting it to the range.
