Help pick a Mini-14 for CA

I just found out the Mini-14 is CA legal!

I have no idea as to what I can and can't have,
Always wanted a Mini-14 and thought I'd be stuck
with some other 223 rifle.

So tell me what I need to know about model, specs
accessories, best places to get it (I'm in Orange County)
and anything else inquiring minds must know.

Im also in Kalifornia. Keep your mags to 10 rnds and your pretty much good to go. There are lots of options for the Mini, however in Kali if you were to say put a Tapco stock on, the rifle would then become an assault weapon. You need to be smart with your accessories and know the laws.
Lots of good info for us Kali people can be found here on www.calguns.net

Yes, by putting on an ATI stock for the Mini it is now far more lethal!!!! The politicians in Commufornia know exactly what they are talking about.

AR's are legal in Kalifornia - with a 10rd "tool" detachable mag.

That's true and because of this loophole, the gun shops are able to sell ARs.

You can put a tapco stock on a mini. You just need a mag lock and a 10 rd mag or less installed. I had a tapco stock on my mini, sold it last month. If you want to install a tapco stock, or any type of stock with a pistol grip California Mini 14 Mag Locks make sure the mags you use are 10 rounders or fives.

You also CANNOT use a stock with a thumbhole in it, like the thumbhole Target model. You cannot have a detachable mag WITH a flashider on the barrel.

To ME, no stock is worth giving up on the detachable mag. Mag lock or not.

Anything over 10 rounds is flat out illegal in CA, be it in a rifle or handgun.

The sole exception is rimfire stuff. You can have a 100 round magazine for your 10/22, but a 12 rounder in your Mini-14 will get you arrested.

The term “assault weapon” also means any firearm that falls under one of the following definitions
pursuant to Penal Code section 12276.1:

(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable
magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.

(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to
accept more than 10 rounds.

(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.

(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and
any one of the following:
(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip,
or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that
allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide
that encloses the barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the
pistol grip.

(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more
than 10 rounds.

(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon,
thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.

(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.

Here's the link to the PDF of the booklet: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/

In the list on the left, click on "California Firearms Laws Summary Booklet".

Welcome, bsaride. Over ten round mags are just illegal per the current laws here in California (unless you had them preban). The Calguns website has a lot of information on the laws of California. They tend to bash the mini a bit though.

The mini is a good choice for California. I like to drop my mags without the assistance of a tool, so I stay away from the pistol grip stuff.

My mini is a 6.8. I bought it with the intent of hunting pigs and other medium game. I had to buy it on Gunbroker and have it shipped to a local dealer. Ammo is a bit pricey, so if you're just want a handy rifle for plinking, self-defense, etc., the 5.56 is probably the way to go, much cheaper.

Folks seem to like their Mini 30's, which can also be used for hunting medium game. Ammo is cheaper than the 6.8 too.

in Cali (unless this changed)

Cannot have them in cali unless they were manufactured before '94 IRRC

My P89 pistol came with 2 factory 15s which I purchased new in '98 in California - it was a good buy, mainly because the pistol and mags were produced before the ban - effectively being grandfathered in and legal to purchase and posses.

not sure if Cali closed the loophole

but basically the way it was when I lived there (I left in 04) if you buy a NEW mini it'll come with a 5 or 10 round magazine in cali. BUT if you go to a gun shop or gun show - you may be able to find pre ban High caps for sale (sometimes new in original packaging) don't expect them to be cheap.

reference code section 12020 in the California state Penal code (this is the section that relates to weapon controls and offences) it'll all be in there

I know about the 10 round mags, I was curious if there are pre-ban mags available.

Anyone using this stock, Sage MINI14ALCS/CVFS?

If you owned a hi-cap magazine prior to the ban, the CA government has decided to graciously allow you to keep it (a 'grandfather' clause). If you attempt to sell your pre-ban hi-cap magazine, you're committing a felony.

What is Commufornia's fetish with 10 round mags? I am so glad I do not live in that state. Sounds utterly retarded.

Ridiculous. Yes ARs are far more lethal than Mini-14s. Does not matter that they shoot the same ammo, ARs are just...........evil!!!

If the politicians out there had a brain in their head.

You think I would need a riser if I put the T1 clone from Primary Arms on my Mini, taking into account my vision issue, or do you think it would be high enough?

Thanks

The politicians don't want you to carry a higher number of rounds in a mag than most of them can count.
