Tactical vs. NRA Mini

I am strongly leaning toward the purchase of the NRA mini. But just became aware of the new tactical model (M-14/20GBCPC).

Is the only difference between these models the Hogue stock and the flash suppressor?

If so, I would prefer the 20GBCPC model. I can always add the hogue stock myself. (which I do like.)

The NRA model comes with 2 mags, the GB comes with 1.

Ah yes, I did notice the 1 mag rather than 2. The barrel is the same except the suppressor, right?

My GB came with two. Maybe your dealer has the habit (as some do) of removing a mag for sale separately.

Yes, the GB has a flash hider.

The GB also has a smaller stock---that's why they call it the compact model.

The GB is stainless with a black finish. That's what I like about it. I have one coming in this week: I also got a Hogue OD green stock for it. The barrel is 16" same as the NRA the flash suppressor takes it to 18"

20 round mags are on sale from Ruger right now for $29 + shipping.

The tactical only comes with one mag, it was not removed by the dealer.

Then why did I get TWO with my SS GB and when did Ruger change the name of the rifle to "tactical" ? You seem to know a lot about what came with my GB. Were you standing behind me when I watched the dealer open the box ?

I don't dispute what you are saying. I think you got lucky.

When I bought mine a week ago, it came with one mag in the box. I asked the shop owner if he was certain it only came with one because I knew the similar NRA model comes with two. He said it comes with one and doesn't have another ruger mag to sell either.

The Ruger website says NRA includes "2 20-Round Magazines" and tactical only says "20-Round Magazine"

I would call them to confirm this but its 8:37am on the east coast.

"when did Ruger change the name of the rifle to "tactical" ?"

Don't get me started up...

It makes me wacky that this name is constantly erroneously used to describe this rifle, especially when Ruger has other rifles that are far more "tactical" right out of the box.

It can only lead to confusion long term...

Good point, but it sure is easier to say than 20GBCPC. Other than the model number it looks like Ruger calls it a "Compact w/ flash suppressor". Call it a "compact".

I just received my M-14/20GBCC (Mini 14 w/Tapco stock). Came with two mags. Unfortunately, the angled stock extension was not included. Just typed a letter to Ruger expressing my disappointment - angled stock extension necessary for good sight pic w/ iron sights.

I just called Rugers Newport center and spoke to Barbara. She told me that only law enforcement issued rifles were being shipped with 2 mags (and of course the NRAs). She was about to send me another one until somebody interrupted her and gave her this information.

My 16" "compact" (Stainless steel with black synthetic stock, with NO muzzle brake) came with 2 mags. It was advertised as a Law Enforcement (LE) model. And is a model # "KM-14/20CP" Stainless. It has the tapered barrel, and is a twin to the NRA (I bought one of those also!), except that it does not have the Hogue stock and is Stainless instead of blued. The dealer had already sold about 6 of them, and each one came with 2 20 rd mags.

Did somebody above mention that the GB was "Stainless with black finish"? I was hoping that is what the NRA was when I bought it, but for all I know, it is just blued.

Edit: I just went out and looked at the M14-20/GBCPC model on their website. It does not say Stainless with black finish, it says blued. Here is the link:
http://ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdSpecsView?model=5847

I would be very interested in a compact model with or without the flash suppressor that is stainless, but is BLACK. That's the whole reason I bought 2 rifles recently! I figured if I had a stainless compact...and a black compact, it was almost as good as a stainless/black compact!

I also would like a flash hider and figure that eventually somebody will make a pin on flash hider for the NRA/Compact models.

My question was rhetorical as I agree with you.

I'm about 99% sure my GB is just blued and not blackened stainless.

Even Ruger says its blued:

What was the price difference between the NRA and the "compact" (20GBCPC)?

If you don't mind me asking.

Check out this video system from Brownell's about finishing metal. It used the word "tactical" in it so be prepared. I have a lot of confidence in Brownell's products. It may be what your looking for. kwg

After re-reading most of this thread and a thread on another site. I recalled what my dealer said when I bought my stainless (not black) GB. He said it was an LE rifle (I am not LE) so it seems that a "LE" Stainless Steel GB comes with two mags but no rings as other Minis have included. Maybe I have "Old timer's disease. When I told the dealer that it had no rings, he gave me a new set he had in stock so I guess I am ahead on that. My Mini model is not shown on the Ruger site. Is there a Ruger site that shows the LE models?

In the last couple of weeks I've bought a new GB my dealer just got in, although Ruger says it's August 2007 production, so it's a 580 with the skinny barrel. It's a 16-1/8 " barrel stainless rifle with flash hider and synthetic stock. It came with two mags and no scope rings, and it does have the "LEO" markings on the receiver.

Our local Ruger sales rep told me that the LEO models were still shipping with the skinny barrel. Perhaps he was only talking about the models with "LEO' actually stamped on the receiver.

If you find a Ruger LE site I'd love to hear about it.

My GBCPC had no rings--but on the web site it clearly states that rings are included---called Ruger a week ago and they said they would send them out---but I have yet to see them.

I just got back from my dealer where I traded my NRA Mini for a short barrelled "Tactical" (M14/20GBCPC). I do not think you will find the word "tactical" on any of the rifles on the Ruger website. It may be a term from their law enforcement catalog. As stated earlier, we have appropriated the term here to distinguish between the NRA 16in gun and the 16in synthetic gun with flashider. There seem to be some guns that are not on the website and presumably not in their catalog. For instance, there is a version of what we are calling the tactical that has a synthetic stock and 18 in barrel with flashider. I have seen this model at recent gun shows. I have also seen a short barrelled stainless gun with no flashider. I believe it had the synthetic stock. Neither of these guns are on the website. I don't know about the blue vs blackened stainless debate. Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for Ruger. As far as I know, if a Mini is stainless, it looks stainless. Before I got my gun, my research had told me it would come with one twenty round mag, which it did. My next step is to sell my synthetic stock and get the Hogue stock through Ruger so that it will have the Ruger medallion. I didn't care much for the NRA medallion.
