Should I buy a Mini 14 or Mini 30 rifle?

So what do you think.
Should I buy a Mini 14 or Mini 30 rifle?

Please post why you choose the particluar rifle.

Also I feel that the mini 30 30rd mag looks to big. Does the mini 30 come with a 20rd mag also? Does they look the same?

I'm not worried about the caliber.
I want to build a AC556 clone and it needs to look as identical as possible.
I first wanted a Mini 14, but got a greate deal on a used mini 30..

Do they look the same?

Welcome to the PerfectUnion forum, Roffa! Youve come to a great place for answers and opinions.

Here's mine.

I would go with the Mini-14. I like the Mini-30, as it is actually the only Mini I own, but if caliber is of no concern, then I would go with the Mini 14 based soley on the availability of Ruger brand hi-cap magazines. Ruger doesnt make anything other than a 5 rounder for the Mini-30, and the aftermarket magazine issue is a little tedious. Also, as you mentioned the Mini-30 thirty round mag IS big.

Lastly, if you want an AC556 clone then it is fitting that you should do it with the 5.56 (.223) receiver of the Mini-14.

I own both and I recommend you first get the Mini-14. Lots of reasons. First, Ruger never made Mini-30 hi cap mags. The Mini-14 hi caps are the more reliable, and the Ruger Mini-14 LEO mags are best. Second, there are more flash hiders etc out there for the Mini as you want an AC-556 look. Third, .223 is available at every Walmart. 7.62 x 39 is also pretty common, but there were some shortages of it last year. 7.62 x 39 used to be super cheap, but not so much anymore. A lot of guys like the Mini-30 for deer hunting, if you might want to do that, then I'd recommend the Mini-30. The Mini-30 is better at shorter ranges, say 150 meters max IMO. The .223 that the Mini-14 shoots is a flatter round and gives you a bit more range, which is better for longer range plinking. If you want a GP fun gun go for the Mini-14. If you want a hunter, go for the Mini-30. Also there are tons of lightly used Mini-14s out there. Good luck.

5Legs pretty much nailed it. I'd only add that reliable hi-cap mags for the mini 30 are almost non-existent. In my fine state of CA that's not a problem because they're illegal anyway. I get by with two inverted USA 10 rounders taped together. Not quite the same thing, but what can you do. Also, if your "deer" happens to be hiding behind a cinder block wall, the Wolf 154gr 7.62x39 round will find him and get to him. That's what I like about the mini-30, that round takes away alot of cover options (havent tried it against thick trees though, not many of them in the desert). Keep a couple mags of those big boys handy. The soviet round is a bit of a kicker too, if your a small fella, you might want to stick with the mini-14. I'm pretty huge and even I have a time of it trying to keep the mini-30 on target from a standing position in a full semi-auto mag dump. Anyway, welcome to the board - run a search on this topic and you'll find a treasure trove of point/counter point on the 30 vs. the 14 (and the AR, SKS and some others too). I feel sorry for some of the new guys with all the reading that's available here, lot's of stuff to catch up on.

I love my Mini-30, and I can't tell the difference between it and an AC556. That's because whatever differences there may be are of no interest to me. But I'm guessing that folks in the know will know those differences. If that is true, you will become one of those people because those differences will mean something to you. And once you become one of those people, those differences will bug you more and more as time goes by if you get a Mini-30 rather than a Mini-14 AC556-lookalike. You might start off happy but become less happy. The Mini-30 will be "not quite right." Why go down that path?

Get the Mini-14. For what you apparently want, it will satisfy you better in the long run.

Big differences:

Mini-30 is in 7.62x39 while AC556 is 5.56x45/.223; also the AC556 is select-fire (automatic).
