I saw a thread below with some serial number ranges, but mine is a bit before that. The serial number is in the 181-00300s range. I'm thinking this would put the date of manufacture sometime around 1978 or 1977. It has the wood upper handguard. I got it used, but it's in mint condition.

You can look this up on the Ruger website.

That 181 prefix serial number is from the early 1980's.

I've got a GB and its a 183 rifle made in 1983.

You're right. According to http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/SE-H-RI-Mini14A.html the first Mini 14 in 1978 was 181-07488, which puts yours in 1977 (?), the last year of the 180 Series. You have one of the first new models made.
