Hey guys, haven't been on in a while but I need a scope for my mini30 and got a question. I'm looking at getting a low power scope, 1" tube, from a quality maker and came across the Weaver 1-3x20 Classic V. It looks to be exactly what I want, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this scope on their mini? I know mini's can be hard on scopes, so I'm wondering if this scope will hold up? Thanks for any responses and if anyone has any recommendations on a low power scope, please let me know. Thanks.
I had that scope on a Mini for a while before I moved it to a 10-22 TD. I liked it and it held up fine. It has a bit of fish-eye at 1x, and you can see the front sight when set on 1X all the way up to 2-something power. The front sight is at the bottom of the field of view and didn't bother me. In fact, all 1X scopes will let you see the barrel and front sight on 1X. I also have a Nikon 1-4 Monarch African on another rifle, which I like better (clearer, higher power, German #4 reticle, etc) but it is quite a bit more expensive and there are no flies on the Weaver, especially for the price.
I have put Redfield 2X7 scopes on my coyote guns. Since the mini is not a long range gun most of the time I have it on 2X in case something comes in fast & close.
I really like the Leupold Hog Hunter scope, but.....I don't care for it having "Hog" written all over it. Even the reticle has "Pig Plex" etched in the horizontal posts. Just not my style.
I have that Weaver on mine. Love it! The best thing is leaving it on 1x and then being able to "sight" with both eyes open, one thru the scope and the other without but with much greater field-of-view. Also think that the trim, low look fits the mini perfectly.
I have one of these scopes mounted on my .416 Ruger Hawkeye African.
It has served me quite well, and I think if it has survived the .416, it will have no problems on your .223.
A mini with it's heavy op rod slamming home will tear up a scope that can stand up to a .416. I am dealing with a wandering zero issue on my 10-22 TD with the weaver 1-3 I took off of my mini. I haven't had a chance to determine if it is the scope or the gun, but my money is on the scope. My mini absolutely ate a cheaper bushnell I had laying around. Broke the glass loose, the reticle moved, and it sounded like a castanet. Before it started rattling around the zero began to wander.
I put one on my mini 14 & thought I should have gone with a 2-7. Nothing wrong with weaver I just should have gone with a little more scope. I should note that I'm 45 with aging eyes & that might not be a problem for you. I have a trijicon tr 24 1-4 on my sr 556 that I like much better but it's a 30mm tube & a lot more expensive. Weaver and Redfield both make 2-7x32 scope for only a little more money. I bought a 2-7x32 weaver but have not mounted it yet. It will be going on my mini 14.
Ok, the wandering zero problem was a barrel nut on the 10-22 TD that was 3 clicks too loose. Tightening it up turned it into a tack driver again, so the Weaver is off the hook.
