Silencers are an NFE class 3 device.
you will need a special federal tax stamp from the BATFE for that which costs a one time 200 dollar fee and you must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check that is if you live in one of the 35 states that suppressors are allowed to be installed on a firearm and the requirements of the laws change from state to state in fact a gun dealer must also be required to be licensed to sell such a device and will not even sell you this type of device unless you have said stamp.
this is the same tax stamp that is required to legally own a full automatic firearm. even threading the end of a barrel in these states requires this stamp. now a muzzle break OTOH is all together different you can install a muzzle break on the end of your barrel but must be permanently fixed to the barrel if you thread the end of the barrel which is usually left hand thread BTW. the way around permanently fixing a muzzle break to the end of your barrel is to have one that fits tightly to the end of the barrel and is fastened to the barrel with set screws. check the state which you live in due to it may not be legal to have a muzzle break attached to the end of your firearm in the state you live in
