Can you free float a stock 10/22 barrel?

Beside buying a new aftermarket stock and .920 barrel, If I remove the front "band" and sand down the inside of the stock, creating a free floating barrel, will this help with accuracy? also would this cause any problems with the function of the rifle(I dont see it but want to be safe)
I use a 1 1/4" sling secured to the front stud and wrap the other end around my arm for a rock steady hold. To me it seems as though I am putting pressure on the barrel and am wondering if that is causing my poor grouping.
I am planning on going the bull barrel and new stock route soon as funds come available here

Thanks for the help

Ok after a little research I found this under tips
Free Floating the Barrel

My question is do you re-install the front band or leave it off on the wood stock?

sand it down, leave off the band. band is anchoring front of barrel to stock (not free float)

Free float

Free floating a stock barrel helps a lot, I have sanded out the top of my barrel band so I can see daylight and still use my sling Randy at CPC does wonders on stock barrels http://www.ct-precision.com/ I have one done by him and groups are as good or better than bulls and not too heavy to carry in the woods. Rimfire Central has some great info and stickies for the 10/22 I have pillar bedded all mine and it helps a lot, Hipshot has a stickie on this if you are handy with and have a drill press.

We'll I went ahead and sanded out the stock with 150 grit sand paper wrapped around a 13mm deep socket. I also using a dremel cleaned the barrel band so it is not touching. I can now slide a post card stock paper completely down and under the barrel the whole length, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! @ 25 meter I was all over the place, now I am shooting out the center of a 1" bullseye at the same 25m. I still have a few flyers here and there but they landed just out of the bullseye. Need to get some different brand 22lr and see what brings the baby even more to life!

Makes a difference doesn't it, wanna get rid of those flyers and have 1/2" groups have Randy do a bolt and barrel job he's in your back yard 1/2 - 3/4 hour drive. Really ticks people of when a stock looking 10/22 out shoots a bull in a custom stock. My bad I forgot about Foxwoods, so it takes awhile longer you're still closer than me.
