Meriwether Lewis' Girandoni air rifle

Like the title says, this is just too cool not to post:
FT forum: This is just to cool not to spread around

I'd known about the air rifle, but not its significance. That's some advanced technology for the turn of the 19th century!

Very interesting. You got to wonder why this technology didn't take off.

Same reason we don't have car chassis built out of titanium, difficult and expensive to produce in mass quantities. Yea you can build some, but the money is better spent on cheaper alternatives for most uses.

It's just that modern suppressed guns are just as quiet or quieter and longer range.

Nobody wanted to make 1,500 pumps to make the rifle work.

Thank you for catching this.
I have read the Lewis and Clark expedition numerous times and always wondered at the comment of air rifle or air cannon that was mentioned.
This fills in a gap of knowledge

Having been at the side of the road pumping up a spare tire with a foot pump, I can relate.
