Depends on how the **** hits the fan doesn't it? Government tyranny, outside invasion, civil unrest or famine?
Consider the following, we live in the USA. The most commonly used rounds in the USA are the 223, 308, 30-06, the 12 gauge and the 22LR. Pistol calibers? Most PD's use the 40 S&W. The military uses the 9mm and there's a spattering of 38/357.
With that in mind logic would dictate the top gun to be a AR. Why? 223 Ammo is plenty and cheap. AR mags are plenty and cheap. The AR is reliable. The military and most PDs use this platform. Therefore supplies can be procured quickly and easily. Though the Mini is a nice gun mags that work reliably cost more than the ARs and if the gun breaks you are screwed as it isn't a modular design that's easily repaired.
Want a bigger bang? M1A Socom. Compact with 20 rounds of big ouch. Military surplus mags are cheap. I like the AR10 but the mags are expensive as hell. Ammo is not cheap.
Don't have big bucks? Rem 700SPS in 223 or 308 or 30-06 or the good ole 12 gauge pump. REm 870 or Mossberg 500 will work just fine. Slugs destroy everything including the shooters shoulder but they aer effective. BAM All previously listed calibers are easily obtained at WALMART where America shops.
Pistols: Go with what your local cops are carrying as mags and ammo will be around. You don't need to go nuts. Pistols aren't all that effective, they'll fend off badguys provided you are proficient with a sidearm. If you not buy a cheap shotgun. Shotgun = point, pull, rack -- repeat as needed.
Enough of the armchair cowboy crap. The most important thing to do is practice so if the SHTF you can hit your threat because a guy who can shoot will take a wannabe Rambo out with a 30-30 lever gun or an old military bolt gun.
Oh ya SKS & AKs are great if you stockpile ammo and mags but if you don't don't bother due to availabilty of those items unless your delusion that the movie Red Dawn is going to take place in your neck of the woods.
And face it if the Gov goes beserk they have technology that's crazy. Now that drones are flying over the US --- YOU ARE BEING WATCHED! BOO...
Of these discussions are fun. This thread needs to die though as nobody is ever going to agree on poop.

Only till the people running the drones ditch to tend to their own. Or the Gov't runs out of borrowed chinese money to buy fuel. Turn this consuming machine on its' head and there will really be SHTF in lots of places. 9/11 was just a taste of what disrupting the money and keeping people home will do. But other than that I've pretty much followed the line you describe as far as guns go.

I truly believe we could see poo flying this year leading up to this election. There's been a lot of black on white crime now that the great unifyer has taken office and if he gets tossed out I think tensions on one side will boil over and the other will have enough of the crap they've been dealing with for years. I was young but around to see the 60's riots. With an inflamed asshole in the 1600 Penn Ave fanning flames its going to be interesting and I don't think he's going quietly.

We thought Bush was going to use the war to stay in office four years ago but he didn't...Someday someone will try it but they will have to be waaay up the military establishments butt and I don't think BHO is anywhere near there. Plus, he really doesn't have big money as a group on his side.
My personal SHTF gear, Marlin 1984 lever 44 mag, Hi-point 995 carbine 9mm, Ruger P95DC 9mm , Marlin 60 with tactical stock. I want to add a Mossberg 500 to the collection but $$, But add in about 3k rounds with what I have currently and it might not be the most impressive stock pile but a formidable one to rely on, it's up to shooter skills.
Hmmm, once again, interesting thread...I'm gonna try not to kill this one
As mentioned in other threads, I live in Norway, with its gun regulations still in place.
I think that the weapons I would be using and/or carrying would depend greatly on the scenario. I don't think there is one gun that caters for all eventualities.
Lots of different scenarios can arise, and depending on where you are, these scenarios would have more or less impact, and would mean different choices in both weapons and tactics. I obviously look at what implications these will have where I live, once again Norway.
Currently I have the following weapons:
Ruger Mini-14 Tactical: suppressed if need be, Zeiss 2.5-10x50mm scope, some large-capacity mags.
primary use is medium-game hunting, but if everything goes tits-up and law/order/government don't exist anymore, it is the obvious choice for self defense.
Ruger 10/22 with integral suppressor: Nikon 1.5-6x42 scope, only 10-rnd mags.
Primary use is small-game hunting.
Star Baikal O/U shotgun 12/76: bird-hunting, grouse and quail and so on.
Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308 win: suppressed if need be, Zeiss 2.5-10x50mm scope.
Primary use is large-game hunting.
I'm gonna start IPSC-shooting soon, and that would mean a pistol of some sort (probably gonna end up with a Sig-Sauer P226 in .40 SW), as well as an AR-clone in .223 Rem. Bushmaster probably. I'll get the pistol first.
If I'm allowed to shoot both minor and major, I might get a DPMS LR-308 as well, but we'll see. That requires a lot af activity and I'm not sure that I would have the time.
I love practical application shooting, and IPSC looks very fun. The only trouble is that there is a two-year waiting period these days on rifles at least. You have to join and be active for two years. Not a big problem for me really, as I'm military and can use my issue rifle during those two years. But would like MY OWN rifle, of course, mine to pimp out the way I like it.
In Norway you can't just buy weapons for the hell of it. You need to have a legitimate use, either hunting or competitive shooting. So buying two AR-platforms with different calibers is not easy. I need to be very active in competitions for that to be allowed. Oh well, time will tell, how much time I got on my hand to shoot in competitions.
One thing I always remind myself though, is that weapons ain't the solution to everything in these situations. Tons of other stuff to worry about.

You may be a native of Norway, but your ability of communicating in the English language is impeccable...
My Remmy R25 is coming tomorrow. Boom. The upper will be going to ADCO within a week to have the barrel threaded. My new SHTF gun backed by an AR with 2 uppers, a couple 12 gauges and a pair of 40's. I liked the M1A SOCOM but couldn't find one in my budget. Oh well, the Remmy/DPMS will still do the trick nicely. And yes H2O nice hardware.

WASR10/63 UF for my main rifle.
SKS would go with me too, though.
I have a WASR10/63 fixed stock for my girl that she likes a lot, the short stock fits her shoulder and size just right seeing as she's something like 5'4.
my opine is that every 'prepper' should have a .22lr pistol (I have 2) and a smaller hideout pistol I have a Beretta .32acp. in addition to the larger/longer firearms that is.
