My New CA Legal AR

I just completed a new project and am on my way to Front Sight tomorrow to wring it out.

As many of you know CA has some somewhat restrictive Gun Laws pertaining to the dreaded "Assault Weapon." If the gun has a Removable Magazine then they go about it by restricting "features" like Pistol Grips, Vertical Hand Grips, Flash Hiders, Collapsible Stocks, Magazine Capacity and Probably some other things too.

There are three ways around this law (which probably won't stand as it is written so badly that nobody understands it, but is still there for now.)

1. Fix the magazine so it can't be dropped out of the gun. difficult to reload but not impossible. in fact there is one outfit that has a mag Loader that inserts in the ejection port and you shove the rounds in post haste. It is actually as fast or faster than changing Mags.

2. Register the Gun as an "Assault Weapon" before the end of the year. Only fools are doing this, but you don't have to change the gun in any way. Trusting souls may not think that Gavin is coming for their guns, but they are wrong.

3 Make the gun "Featureless," which is gaining support daily. There are various Stocks and Grips available to accomplish this and lots of people are doing it.

I however chose to go one step farther.

I ordered a Fight Lite SCR Lower Receiver Assembly and built a Featureless AR using that.

The Fight-Lite (formerly ARES Defense) lower assembly consists of a lower receiver that is a cross between an AR forward half back to the rear of the mag well, and a Remington 1100 Stock and Recoil System.

There is no buffer tube as the recoil spring is housed in a tube that runs down into the Buttstock thru the grip. The Bolt Carrier is shortened and has a strut called a Rat Tail on the rear end that pushes on the Recoil Spring as the gun cycles.

The gun runs exactly like an AR, uses AR Magazines and the Upper Receiver Assembly of your choice.

The lower comes with the buttstock and recoil assy and the Bolt Carrier. You supply the upper receiver assy and bolt, cam and firing pin which can come off you existing AR.

In my case my existing AR is a Bushmaster Carbon 15 which is an all plastic gun. I decided to spring for a Palmetto State Upper Assy. it is a 16' Dissipator with a 1:7 twist SS barrel and a Rifle Length Magpul Hand Guard..

This completed gun is perfectly legal in CA and joins my Mini14 and Kel-Tec SU16 as "Featureless Semi Auto Carbines." And I may get a 24" upper for it soon as well,,, and will probably need a golf bag to carry all the parts.

Here's Pics of the gun so far.

Obviously I installed another Bushnell TRS-25 on this gun just like all the rest I have, and one of my BPM 1.5" Slings.

I shot it today and was getting 1" groups at 50 yards with the Red Dot Sight with a 3MOA Dot. I was 5/5 on the 8" gong at 200 yards and 2/3 on the 8" gong at 300 yards with a 12" holdover.

The thing shoots! All the capability and interchangeability of an AR with none of the Political BS. and it doesn't look stupid like the one below.

The going price at Brownell's is $604. Believe me it's worth it.

There are three stock configurations Sporter like I got Monte Carlo if you plan on running a scope or Short Sporter.

Very well made piece of gun craft.

Its had my interest for quite some time... Price is a bit steep for me right now. I will probably stick with making what I have compliant if regulations are ever released

I doubt you get a high participation rate in CA. We got about 2% compliance in New York. However, most may have their "public" and their "private" AR. Not that I know about that other than speculation. The ARES has been chosen by some, other went the stupid looking stock route. A friend went the drill the hole through the mag well and weld a bolt so a mag can't be inserted. We however can have 10 round removable mags but not muzzle devices. If the mag is fixed we can have all the bad features.

So what did I do you ask? I went with the DPMS single shot lower. I can have all the features I want. The last hurdle is to get the bolt to stay open after each shot.

WF: buy the time you get all the necessary "compliant items" on or off the gun you will be half way there and have something that is a PITB to shoot, and no fun at all.

This gun is fun and it handles beautifully, once I get back from Front Sight Saturday Night I will have the operation down pat and be ready for 3 gun.

I just couldn't bring myself to defile my AR with most any of the BS alternatives. If the Law doesn't get shot down due to ambiguity, (it is so poorly written virtually any challenge will result in at least an injunction) I will probably end up storing the gun at my Bro in Laws house in Las Vegas and only use it when I go to FS. I've got plenty of other guns to shoot, and in fact I probably should get rid of some of them to make room.

All you really have to do is take the bolt out of the gun and it no longer is considered a gun! And thus legal to have. Also With NY's 2% compliance to their law it is doubtful that we should expect anything more here.

I'd just not worry about it. But I would Highly Recommend a Fight Lite SCR lower or complete rifle so as to be completely under the radar.

I have been told that in NY if you remove the upper from the lower and the pistol grip, you are now legal. Since the lower is the firearm. Having an upper in full battle gear is not a firearm and therefore not an issue. But who wants to test the law.

Randy, my ar already has an armaglock on it. If that turns out to be noncompliant I will find another device unless registration proves benificial by allowing a standard mag release. Either way I also plan on a featureless build too using a survivor systems option zero. I really do like your rifle. I just don't like the cost.

Well: I just got back from Front Sight and the gun performed pretty well.

There is some slight alterations I have to make to make it a little more friendly for the Malfunctions Drills but other than that it was a joy to shoot.

I ran well and the only malfunctions I had were with one of my P Mags not holding the bolt open after the last shot. Happened several time including during the test and it cost me big time.

I have to get a different Charging Handle as the stock one tears my fingers up, and I also have to either find, or make a Ambi Mag Release so that I can do Proper Emergency Reloads. Right now all magazine and bolt manipulations have to be done with my right hand. The position of the mag release does not allow this to happen easily and as a result I am slow on that drill.

All in all the gun performed very well and I will be taking it back hopefully very soon.

Had a great time there and I have to recommend Front Sight to everyone here who is wanting to progress up thru the shooting sports to a higher level of competency. I learned a bunch of new things this time (which happens every time I go) and all of them were useful and improved my shooting.

My main training thrust right now is to improve my Offhand Shooting at 100+ yards. I blew my chance at a Distinguished Grad Cert on the first three shots from 100 yards by having those shots just off the gray. The other 27 shots were on the money in their respective 5 point boxes. So I finished -15 after the first iteration. DG is -15 max.

Here's a pic of the test target.

Sorry for what you have to endure in CA.

I don't have the same restrictions where I live, but I have been wanting one of the ARES lowers for a while, just because I like the idea of the traditional rifle look and feel. I think it would be a fun thing to own and shoot. Thanks for the info.

Well Hopefully we won't have to endure all the BS much longer, because today the NRA and CRPA announced between 6-12 lawsuiots against the state of CA for BS gun laws that "Infringe" on our rights.

The Assault Weapons ban which killed the AR 15 will be shot down , the Hi cap mag ban will go too, mainly because they don't do anything to prevent or lessen crime, they just hamstring law abiding citizens, and everyone knows including the Aholes that wrote the law.

They Want CA to be the first "Gun Free State" However the the actual result will be the first "Law Abiding Citizen Open Season and Free Fire Zone!"

They never go after criminals, they only go after the good people, and their goal is to create a Police State which will be the byproduct of a Socialist State.

The main reason why the left is going Insane right now is because they are seeing all of their hard work towards the Socialist Goal being Trumped.

There are way too many stupid people out there who believe this ship, and they are being educated to this end in our schools which are controlled by Democrats.

It has got to stop!
