Honestly, other than breaching or hunting the shotgun (IMO) serves limited use, in defending the 'castle' its a decisive point defense weapon. If you need to be mobile I will take a small cal rifle with good ammo and own my 300 yd sphere if existence with reasonable confidence.

Indeed, why bother to own a shotgun at all? it's not nearly as "handy" for around the house defense as a pistol, it's impossible for ccw, and it lacks the sustained firepower, range and penetration of the rifle. At ranges inside a home, 5 yds and less, the shot pattern is only 2-4" wide, so you still have to aim it like it was a rifle, and it's not at all easy to use while opening doors, holding a light, a kid, a phone, while looking under a bed or behind clothes hanging in a closet, etc.

gotta disagree - for engagements in urban terrain or inside buildings at 30 yards and less the autoloader or 12 gauge pump shotgun is DEVASTATING. the only other weapon I would rather clear a building with unknown occupants in it is a true SBR assault rifle or sub machine gun. (which most people don't have access to, nor do most Police departments.) there is a reason the 12 gauge shotgun continues to be found in MOST police cars to this day. for the Money and the ease of use - it it a vicious and effective close in weapon.
Some people don't even seem to realize what a slug is capable of doing. You've got a big .50 caliber hunk of lead hurling at a target at 1000+FPS .. and it's pretty darn accurate out to a certain distance. If you need to shoot something at 100+ yards, pop a few slugs in that Super 90 or 870 .. and you suddenly have a big honkin' rifle in your hands. Sure, it isn't going to be a precision weapon, but if you are capable with a long gun, you should be able to hit a man sized target for defense at 100 yards or so.
A shotgun is a multi-use tool. It's not just some novelty. If it was, the Saiga-12 would not be in the hands of Russian Special Forces and our cops, military, etc would not have shotgunners, either. You have a vast variety of loads to choose from, and that gives you MANY uses for the scattergun. Anything from hunting small game to defense and everything in between, as well. You just need to set up your shotty the right way for the purpose it's intended for.
The bottom line? Anyone who thinks one should not own a shotgun is a dumb arse. EVERYONE needs to at least have a short defensive scattergun.
That pic was taken 2 years after my medical discharge at a 10 mile road race with 30 pounds of climbing gear and my sig with 3 mags FWIW . I actually used ALICE gear when most everyone else was using MOLLE. It was just easier to carry extra ammo for my SAW on a web belt. Although 1/2 of my company used ALICE packs too. between the 51s needing a rigid spot for their rockets and us 11s breaking plastic frames we bought a lot from the local surplus stores.
I personally prefer the alice pack to the new ILBE sh*t. That thing is too damn big and top heavy. On the other hand, that ILBE day pack is the shiz nizzle
i agree with the thought that if a criminal hears you rack your weapon, you forgot to load it in the first place! I keep five rounds on my shot gun in a side-saddle with four in the magazine tube and my Uzi has two loaded magazine pouches in close proximity to it So I am good to go. With those two weapons,I would not even bother with a handgun.But, I do live near Detroit, so anything is possible. Even the squirrels here wear body-armor, ride Great Danes and carry Ak-47's.
