If you use the 90 gr Vld bullet and all the tricks that the 308 guys use to make it seem like the 308 is a "1000 yd capable" load. It's not, really, you need the 300 mag or something like that, but the 223 can match the 308, by using a 26" barrel and starting the 90 gr bullet at 2800 fps. This bullet has such a very high ballistic coefficient that it still has 1200 fps left at 1000 yds. Google for Berger Bullets and check it out.

I will bet on the 308 every day and on Sunday at 1000 yds, and your 223 would be all over the tgt and not even capable of killing a deer since there is little enery left at that range. How do I know? I have shot both rounds at close and long ranges. .308 is by far a better long range round.

if you thnk that the 223 blows all over, wait until you try 45-70 in a wind. it drifts like a balloon. the 223 Ar wins the 600 yd matches, and all the other yardages too in NRA, competition. About 12 years ago, a WOMAN Marine beat EVERYONE at the Nationals, using her M16, in 223. :) You wannabes can cry about it and lie about it all you want, the facts are there for anyone to check.

405 gr 45-70 bullet fired from a black powder rifle will impact the target at 1500 yards as well as a 168 gr .308 bullet from a M14 using smokeless powder and still be a killing shot. Using a match 72 gr bullet the M16 can hit a target at 1000 yards but it has pretty much lost its steam after 600 yards. Poking holes in paper does not make it a long distance killing machine.

In a 10mph wind at 1000 yards the 5.56 will have drifted nearly 15", the .308 9" and the 45-70 I don't know but it has held 20" groups at 1000 yards and still has killing power at 3500 yards.

Buffalo hunters killed buffalo at 500 yards with the 45-70 but I don't think it could happen with the 5.56. Gophers sure but anything big enough to hurt you back, I doubt it very much.
