I was just given a Colt Anaconda and I noticed when I hold the trigger down the cylinder has some movement, not a lot but it is there. Now my Cadillac......er ah my Python has no movement whatsoever. Love that gun. I was wondering how much of a problem this could be. I have not fired it yet. What other checks should I be doing? Other than that it seems in good working order.
Is the movement rotational only or fore and aft and angular?
Does it move more than when the trigger is reset?
Does it do this loaded and unloaded?
Does it do it on all cylinders?
Depending on the movement and amount thereof, there can be some minor issues that need correcting. It's not uncommon for cylinders to have a little motion. The reasons can range from improper hand lift to a bit of debris blocking full engagement of the cylinder stop. There can also be worn parts that need proper fitting. Fore and aft motion is a different issue entirely, and even then a little motion is acceptable to make sure empties clear the recoil shield. Find a knowledgable gunsmith and ask him to inspect it. Have him check the cylinder shake and gap and cylinder range. A good gunsmith will already know what to inspect, but if he doesn't check these things you'll know to go somewhere else.
I wouldn't worry about it right now then. If you find that it spits when shot a little work is in order, but based on what you've said the gun is probably in spec. why does the Python lock up tighter? - could be less shots through it and better hand fitting. All revolvers will loosen up a little over use.
If the movement is rotational, a tiny amount of wiggle is permissible. The coned secton at the barrel's breech end takes care of any SLIGHT misalignment. If the bolt notches in your cylinder are peened at all, you may have a problem which will get worse with continued use.
If the movement is fore-and-aft, you have end shake. If this were a S&W, I'd tell you to order a shim kit from Brownell's. It takes up at least some of the slack. Might be they have a similar kit for the Anaconda.
