I have a pre-29 S&W 44 Mag in really really good shape. There is one screw on the right side behind the trigger, one just in front of the trigger, and one on the front of the trigger guard. There are no other visible screws. How do I tell if this is a four or five screw config? Thanks.
Those very first .44 Magnums are also known as five-screws as they had four sideplate screws and one screw entering from the front of the triggerguard. In 1956 they became four screws with the elimination of the upper sideplate screw . . .
In this next link you will find several photos; the next to the last photo of a S&W with smaller grips, shows an additional screw which is covered by the grips in the other photos.
If you remove your grips, I bet you will find a total of 3 sideplate screws plus one screw entering from the front of the triggerguard; thus 3 + 1 = 4 screws.
