I found on gunbroker.com, a smith and wesson m 60 with 3" barell and adjustible sights, referred to as "target model". The add said that only about 500 were made. Can anyone confirm or deny this? The reason I ask is that I have one of these excellent little guns, which I bought new and didn't know that it was rare (if it is). Whatchall think?
Exactly as pictured Joe, but as Moxie said, .38 spl. only. I know they are made now in .357 mag. I think I will write S&W for more info unless someone has something more. Thanks
Model 60 fan here as well. I have never heard of a model 60 with adjustable sights either. As far as I know, S&W changed the model designation with the addition of something as significant as adjustable sights. Then again, they now have a Model 60 in .357 Mag, don't they?
BTW, Mine was a Model 36 (Blued version) with a 3" heavy barrel. Unfortunately sold it to a friend many years ago.
There are about 3 pages of info in The Standard Catalog of S&W on the Model 60. If you still have box it has a product code that would be the key bit of info. Also in side the crane(in front of cylinder) is a Model#, 60-X, X being a particular design change. There are at least 18 for the Model 60. A "special run" with adjustable sights was made in 1986, as 60-1s. This is most likely the "less than 500". In 1996(in 357 Magnum) a target variation as 60-10 was produced. And the Target is still offered.
Whatever, whenever, you have a fine revolver. Model 60 was first production stainless revolver produced by S&W.
Post model number and serial number, I can tell you more. The Standard Catalog of S&W is a great book if you want to learn more on this wonderful history.
If I owned the 1986 model I would get a factory letter, "it is a hard to find" I am sure.
