I have and have been using for years a lee perfect powder measure. Until now I've used large grain powders Varget or H 4895 for my 223. Today I bought a pound of H 335, it is so fine it leaks around the drum and sometimes almost jams the drum so that it won't turn properly and drops erratic weights of the charge. any suggestions? ( other than buying another measure)
I don't have a Lee Perfect powder measure but I use a Lee Pro 1000 with a new style powder dump. I have to check to make sure the screws are tight so the powder does creep out. I'll stop and clean everything off and start again.
I've had that same problem with my Lee powder measure. fine ball or flake powder gives it fits. but stick powder it does OK with. I use the dippers for the fine stuff, powder thru expander die it does OK.
The only reason I bought H335 was because of it's so called "easy, accurate dispensing"
fooled me! I think I'll stick to H 4895, a bit dirty but accurate and flows ok with the "short cut" powder.
Whoa don't give up on the h335. Good stuff. I load with win 748 and it is VERY similar. When you stack the drops, the plastic spacers between the screws prevent it from sealing off at the little teflon wiper. Snug it down good, and you will have no problems. I have been tempted to shave the little plastic spacer wing things down a tad, but snugging it seems to work OK.
Also, I have found better charge consistency putting the smaller disc on the top so it empties completely. This changes your charge weight, but it will be consistent. If the big one is on top, powder sits on the shoulder between the two and can decide to fall... or not.
i ran into the same problem with the lee perfect powder measure. you can try adjusting the tension on the drum with the screw on the right side. that didn't work for me so I then tried it in my older lee powder measure that is well seasoned. and it worked much better but would still bind on occasion. Yesterday I bought a dillon 550B for reloading my .223 rounds I got it all setup and running and I am using H335 in it and it runs great!! I suppose the best option to be able to use H335 without any issues is upgrade to a "better" measure. I quoted better because I still feel the lees are darn good measure just not friendly to ball powders. Ill still use my lees on my precision rifle ammo the lee is the only powder measure I know of that will consistently throw to within 2 tenths of a grain. A long time ago I briefly had a RCBS powder measure I ended up trading off for a case tumbler and beam scale. I wasn't too upset about seeing it go since the supposedly "better" measure was not consistent at all I was lucky if it would throw within a half grain most of the time it would throw within a grain.
Wipe the inside of the powder measure with a dryer sheet and you will get more consistent charges.
