There is a guy who works at a local lumber store, and walks to work every morning. We are not talking about walking 1 or 2 blocks, he walks next to a major highway for 2 - 3 miles.
This morning I stopped and gave him a ride.
When my wife and I were building our chicken coop, the guy who walks to work helped load our lumber.
He has been walking to work for 6 years.
Then I think about the people on welfare that will not even put an application in to go to work, much less walk to work.
The welfare mentality is so ingrained is some people, they would starve to death before getting a job. That fellow needs to get himself a bicycle at least.
Walking has served humans well for transportation so far. Many appear to be devolving out of it, however. Horses and bicycles have proven to be successful adaptations. Cars do more harm than good overall.
Austin used to be a far safer city in which to ride a bicycle, but bike theft was (and may still be) common. I did not own a car for 15 years, during which time I rode, walked or took the bus everywhere. After my third bike in less than a year was stolen (chain cut each time), I just walked and took the bus for awhile. My shift ended around the time the last bus ran, and on days we weren't finished by then, I walked six miles home after having been on my feet all day.
Screw walking. I just bought a new dodge truck that gets really bad gas mileage but its super fast and very comfortable to ride in. Thank you capitalism for giving me the money to buy anything I wanted. Oh yeah, and hard work which made capitalism work.
[QUOTE=freesw;724153]Thank you qman for that excellent example of how capitalism promotes irrationality.[/QUOTE
Irrationality? I dont see working your ass off and buying something you want because you deserve it irrational. I guess some welfare recipients on a limited income might see it differently. Too bad.
You're not picking up the tab for the external costs that gas guzzler will impose on others during its cycle from manufacture to junkyard, nor of the unnecessary extra gasoline it will burn, from extraction to refinery to atmosphere. You're sticking others with those costs, qman.
Capitalism is the institution that makes such theft legal. It is a system that rewards waste, irresponsibility, shortsightedness, and is causing the destruction of the planet's capacity to sustain mammalian life.
For most of the population, I'd imagine walking to work would be a very impractical mode of transport. For instance, if I were to walk from my house to my work, I'd have to leave my house at 10:30 p.m. the night prior. I've completed many 25+ mile ruck marches with the Army and those take roughly 7 to 8 hours to complete. My personal best was 7 hours, 43 min. for a 25-miler in Korea. But, if I lived closer - like I did when I first arrived at this duty station - I would walk to work; but it was only about an 1/8th of a mile from my house to my unit headquarters... LOL
Anyway, back on topic; are you planning on giving a ride to him everyday, Kevin? If he is on hard times, perhaps gifting a bike to him would help. I can't imagine walking all that way twice daily is any fun in that wunnerful Texas heat!
Thanks Higgibaby. I dont really care what an america hating anti capitalist little ferret faced douchebag thinks about my new truck. Ive worked my ass off and Im rewarding myself. Thank you capitalism. I was told at a very young age that if I worked hard I could have all the things in life I wanted. Guess what? Thats true. It actually gets pretty good gas mileage for a truck. Haters gonna hate. Thats just the way it is.

If I were a female I would tell you I love you!
I'm looking at new earth destroying gas guzzling pick up trucks, or have been, I may wait till early spring.

We have a BLIND man, and a mentally ill man who have worked in customer relations for over 10 years, yes, I said CUSTOMER RELATIONS. They are excellent people, the customers love both, and they earn more money then disability will allow them.
So even though they don't collect a monthly check because they earn too much, they do have their healthcare taken care of by the state, and plus the big boss man helps them with extra medical costs too. They rarely incur uncovered costs though.
And neither drives so the state transports them to work and back at no cost.
I have nothing but utter respect for both of them, it is truly humbling to watch their efforts and, see the joy they experience to be able to be out in the world with the rest of us making something happen!
Portland metro has developed quite a nice public transportation system through out the metro area with a bus and light rail system. It also has a nice system for both bicycle and foot to round it out. Yes I still use cars for transportation, but I use the motorcycle when weather allows and since the bus is less than a mile away and easily walked to, the light rail train less than 3 miles, and both allow bicycles aboard, the missus and I often use them when traveling into Portland and the outer towns of the metro area. It makes going to the airport a big plus since the rail stops at the front ticket gate, no messing with long term parking. Around here you will see plenty of people walking and biking to the bookend towns of my town, both which are a pleasant walk of 3 miles with plenty of rural to add to the view. If the weather was so crappy in the fall and winter, there is little reason to really drive a car in the metro area, especially if you bike. Cities around the US could learn a lot on how to build a transportation system by looking at Portland. Not cheap but in the end worth while.
As far as qwman, it's nice that you have the ability to purchase a new vehicle, congrats. Pickups are a valuable asset, but don't look down on those who prefer other methods of transportation, not everyone wants to spend their money on high fuel bills and insurance. I enjoy driving my old 2002 F150, but only when I need to, doesn't make sense to pay at the pump if I can go cheaper another way. I am sure the DH will have some lie to spout in response but I can care less about his lies or opinions, they mean nothing to a American.

Let us not forget to also scold those who look down on qwman's preferred mode of transportation.

I wasn't scolding, and freesw drives too. qwman was out of line with his comment, had nothing to do with the intent of Kevin's OP. Free also drives a car so he should have just let the stupid post lie, it was designed to do nothing but inflame a thread that wasn't designed to be much of anything beyond telling us how much he thought abut the guy who walked. Free just threw fuel on it, no one here really cares much about environmental issues anyway. If qwman wants to blow his money on fuel it's his problem, I am too old and practical anymore to be impressed by somebody's vehicle, to me they are tools to get from A to B, I prefer the most economical route (or the funnest if I get to jump on the old motorcycle for a run, love the 60 mpg)
It really shouldn't be a big deal to walk if you live in an area where walking is a viable mode of transportation.
Higgite, there was a time you wouldn't tolerate a post like qwman's, is it just because of free you ignore his?

Sorry, sounded a lot like you were scolding someone. And I could care less if freebie drives, flies or tele-transports.

Ignore who? freebie? Yes, I ignore freebie just because of freebie. If you mean ignore qwman's posts, I have a hard time letting a good dose of sarcasm go by without contributing. qwman's post was more than worthy of recognition.

The subject is about people working and doing what they can to get there, not laying around crying about having sore knees and mooching off the tax payer.

I consider his post more along the lines of someone posting in the mini section and having someone come in and crap on it telling us how minis suck and we ought to buy xyz guns. It was poor manners and has nothing to do with sarcasm. Free responded, he did not initiate. But he was foolish to think he would be listened to.

Somebody else making your weak existence even worse.
