A Note about leadtime estimates
People have been wondering why I refrain from making leadtime estimimates, especially on new products. Here's the situation...
Once upon a time I tried to give the best estimates I could, based primarily upon what was told to me (by the people fullfilling the orders). I made it very clear that these were NOT firm commitments, only best guesses. When these estimates were not met (a situation out of my control), several folk dropped accusations that I had broken my promises- promises I never made in the first place. I was very careful NOT to use the "P-word", and stated and restated that these were estimates only. Still, the accusations proliferated.
So, I am forced now to simply not give estimates of any kind, even broad projections. It doesn't matter whether estimates are made publicly or privately by PM, believe me they get misinterpreted, sometimes I feel on purpose. It is a shame that the actions of a few must affect everyone adversely, but such is life. I hope most of you understand my position.
