latest version

Today I fitted some synthetic rails to my mini. The scope is a temporary one to do some load development. I am still undecided on the final configuration for this rifle, but am having a ball with it in the meantime.

The paint is making it tough to photograph except outside with my cell phone camera...i will get better pics tomorrow if the sun comes out.

What scope mount do you have on there? I see some guys with the scout rail on their minis but to me it looks like the scope would be mounted too far forward, I like where yours is.

Did the accu-strut help and what scope mount do you have on there? I drug my mini out of the closet after a 20yr hibernation and want to do some up grades, I'm mainly trying to get some information to decide what to do to bring it into the 21st century.

Looks like standard Ruger integral rings to me.

Aren't the rings separate from the mounts? I'm unfamiliar with the Ruger standard equipment for scopes, all mine had was the original peep sight.

My friends have AR's, SCAR's, ACR's, P90's, AK's, HK91's and the Mini is sill my favorite to shoot....I do like the HK91 but after a full mag my shoulder doesn't!
I don't remember is the HK91 5.56 or is that the HK93. I had the 5.56 for a while didn't care for it as well as the mini either, and trying to find the brass after the HK pitched it, good luck if your in the desert brush at all.

Mini's use mounts that are integral to the receiver. The rings for them are specific to Rugers design. They have several other rifles, and some handguns with the same integral mounting system. They are located just forward of the rear sight, and just forward of the ejection port. Half moon clamp slot on sides, and slot on top for alignment and locking rings in place.

Borrowed this pic from google search...

I am not certain that all models follow this same integral system though. Every mini I've ever owned has had them.

Factory ruger rings as included with the 581 ranch rifle. The strut is my own home brew and primarily functions as a heat sink. I really don't have enough data to say if the accuracy is improved. i CAN say the accuracy appears to be around 2MOA either way in some very informal 100 yard shooting with a scope that wouldn't adjust to move the point of impact. All the groups were around 2 inches, except the 10 shot iron sight group that was a 2inch by 4 inch oblong that was horizontally strung and very likely to be my poor eyesight.

I will do more shooting now that i am developing a handload for it. I am frankly having trouble shooting slowly and deliberately for groups. It is just too much fun to do quick acquisition rapid fire on reactive targets. I will settle down soon and get more useful information for you. For now, i will say it functions very nicely as a heat sink and cools the barrel rapidly. Accuracy doesn't seem affected at this point, but for the kind of shooting I am doing, i doubt it matters. It shot 2 inch groups both ways, but NONE of those were serious deliberate bench shooting for a group. Just quick shooting from a rest on the first day out. I have only about 150 rounds through it so far, so more will follow as I figure it out. There was a question about the bipod on the strut..i will get to that too, now that I have a bottom rail to use the bipod on. I will also eventually compared the side sling mount to the stock one for offhand, seated, prone, and barrier shooting. It just needs to stop storming on my days off.

Here's the result of yesterdays stormy day...rails added and ready for some real testing and load development:

the right side rail is for my light. The left one carries my sling swivel. The ones on the barrel may go unused if the bipod shows adverse affects I don't want to deal with on the strut/barrel position. I see the possiblilty of an ATI stock next year when bonus time comes around again. This will be the setup for awhile now..just shooting ahead and some hunting of small critters.

SublimeBoa; My 182 series doesn't have the half moon clamp slots shown, any other options? The UTG set up the Slamski was complaining about in his earlier post my only choice?

Interesting. I was given this link to a B-Square scope rail that installed in the bolt stop cover on the side. Maybe an option for you? All the way to the bottom of the page.

Ruger Mini-14 Military Rifle Scope Mounts

I've been looking at those too. I finally found a post last night here (sorry, didn't save it) where the poster said it required a "chin weld" and i won't be able to live with that. I will probably go with the gg&g and just take the whole thing off when i want to use irons. That will also give me a red dot option using qd rings on my scope. For me, irons will probably be rare, as much as I want it to be the other way. Age is winning the eye battle i fear.

I still am undecided, but that's the way i am leaning...i realize the gg&g is not an option if you don't have the factory mounts.
I read a review on amazon for the utg variant (mt-214 on the page linked) of the b-square mount...he said the rifle had no receiver mounts, so maybe this is the best way for you, YZblue.

You sure it was B-Square? They're pretty reputable, and many have tried to copy, but fell short.

There was only the reference to the "chin weld"..nothing about reliability. On amazon, both the utg and b-square get about the same reviews, but the one about the lack of mounts was on a UTG review..said it was a police gun without ranch rifle mounts. As far As I can see, they both would be okay, but I want my optic a little lower than that.

I should clarify..the utg review said it worked great without any factory receiver mounting ...not a ranch rifle.

A quick pic of my Mini after a home duracoat job. I've done 4 or 5 of the snake skin look jobs, and other multi color guns.

Preacherman....Nope Bushnell Trophy...Can't bring myself to put a $1000 optic on a $500 gun. I REALLY like the T reticule Bushnell uses on it....very fast target acquisition. It is also built like a tank. I do wish it used a CR123 battery instead of a 3032. All in all it is a very nice optic. BTW I started my Sparta build this weekend...I have an older model so I have to modify the top rail...so far so good! I will post pics when I am done.

Every time I get on opticsplanet i can't help but eye that bushnell trophy

I've been wondering about it for some time, looks great!!

How does it work out at range? Say 100 yards and on?

this is such a cool and useful thread to see all the different options for the minis and then being able to pick out the ones you want rather than spending the money only to find out that the part isn't quite the look you were aiming for.

Pet-Rock....mine works great out to 100 yards, without magnification I can't really see using it much further that that ...really like any Red Dot style you have to learn how to compensate for distance...for me the T reticule is really good for this unless it is a small target. Only real downside I can see with it is that you have to have a rail on top...no scope rings....for some mini's that can be an issue....not with your series though.

Sublimeboa, justasking & yzblue - The B-Squared is really the same thing as the UTG, when I looked at them both the UTG was built a little beefier and had the side rail if you wanted it. And yes it does mount your optic pretty high so your shells can eject properly...also it allows you to use your iron sights which is kinda cool. Downside is that it seems to always want to loosen up....takes our decently accurate mini's into "can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn" accuracy.

My 196 series

Shortened barrel with pinned and soldered Choate sight and compensator
Tuned action and trigger
Barrel mounted scout rail (not attached to the handguard)
Wood stock from Ebay

Pending a possible Choate handguard - if it will fit

Thanks! Actually I started a separate thread about the scout rail attachment. You can find it HERE. I purchased this rifle a month ago from a private party who had the work done. Very happy with the way it shoots.
