Illinois (Chicago) gun shows and ranges

I live in cook county pretty close to the city. its hard to find good rifle ranges that are close the closest one i know of is in ottawa. Does anybody know of any good ranges in Illinois that are not terribly far from Chicago? Also, any good gun shows? I can't seen to find anything that is less than 90 minutes away.

Your only hope is to get away from Daly. Run while you can. I lived in Chicago for all of 1984. I didn't even know that there was a gun range of any kind even within 90 minutes of Chicago.

Seriously, I know of nowhere near Chicago for you. You might check Gary, IN. They are a fair bit more sensible in Indiana about guns. Hey, move there and you can even own a handgun and get a CCW. You would still be in driving range of Chi-town.

Maybe try out www.wheretoshoot.org. I found a few ranges where I live this way, but since in Chitown you can't really own a gun unless its so old you probably will be hard pressed to find a range.

I just ran across this thread and thought I'd post so if anyone see's this they can avoid having their guns taken away. Here in Cook Kounty Illinois all the good stuff is banned. If you find a rifle range in Cook Kounty don't take your AR, AK, SKS, anything with a high capacity mag, anything with a bayonet lug, anything with a pistol grip, etc... Anything worth having will be taken away by the nazi drug cops. It seems that they can't catch the real criminals so they've criminalized tax paying, gainfully employed, register voters. So far this year, if I remember correctly, 30 students have been killed as a result of gang shootings, stray bullets, and the like. how many of the shooters had their FOID card? How many of them even know what a FOID card is? Rest assured they didn't purchase their guns the way I purchase mine. I can't wait to get out of Cook Kounty!

Greetings,

I live in Gurnee and recently discovered a real nice outdoor range just east of Union Grove, Wisconsin. I have heard about Bristol but they will only let you shoot with one round in the magazine. The Union Grove range has been there for about 60 years. Dues are $75.00 first year and $25.00 a year after. They have 25, 50 and 100 yard range, trap skeet and a archery range. The range is about 20 minutes north of the border. I believe it is the Hwy 11 exit off of the expressway. I think the name is Wisconsin outdoor club or something like that. I am going to join and I can get you more info if you like. All the paperwork is out in my car.

* Bell's Gun Shop in Franklin Park (indoor range). They allow rifles, but you must use frangible ammo.

* Gun World in Bensenville. They're in the process of moving due to the O'Hare Expansion Project, but are expected to re-open (according to their answering machine message). Thanks, Daley!

* Maxxon in Des Plaines(indoor range). Rifles & pistols are allowed, maybe shotguns.

* Buffalo Range in Ottawa (outdoor range). Rifles, pistols, shotguns.

There's a shop/range in Aurora near the Fox Valley Mall, but I don't recommend it. Very RUDE owner & unknowledgeable sales staff. They all walk around with one hand on a holstered sidearm as they speak to you, as if you were going to try to jump them.

I've also been to the one in Bristol, Wisconsin. I dislike the fact that they think I can't be trusted with more than ONE round in my semi-auto (or any type of) rifle. Try firing a Cetme without a mag, or loading one round in a mag & removing it each time you fire it.

Don't expect ANYTHING in Cook County as far as gun shops or ranges. Gun shows are in Du Page County & Kane County. There are many others, but these are the closest.

Just thought of another range. The Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee has a very nice range. They let you shoot rifles in a tube as long as it is frangible ammunition.

I havent been on this thread in a while. I just called Maxon Gun store in Des Plaines, Il. Guy was very nice on the phone. They have a 50 foot range and they allow rifles with normal ammo (just no wolf) so you dont hafe to buy frangibles. I forgot to ask about shotguns. He also said they were in cook county and i said so that means i cant bring my AR and he said yes you can as long as its not a colt. I dont know if thaqt makes sense to me but i will look into that before i bring an ar into cook county.

I use Wolf ammo in my Mini-14 & have not been thrown out of Maxxon yet. In fact, a guy who called himself the range officer there commented on my smoky ammo being Wolf. He had a Colt AR, so...

and i think belle's in farnklin park closed. i called there and it said the line was dfisconnected. also, i googled it and all these articles came up about the ATF closing them because they sold something like 750 guns that were used in crimes or something like that. That are is high crime im not to far from there. Also, at Maxxon can you use shotguns m1marksman?

I've never brought a shotgun there, so I'm not sure. I'd rather go to Buffalo Range in Ottawa. It's outdoors & you can bring anything you want. It's almost 1.5 hours away, but the peace of mind that nobody from Daley's goon squad will be watching you is priceless. As far as the AR, take it to Buffalo Range, too. I don't believe what people tell me over the phone. Sounds like they just don't know or want to cover their own asses.

If you want to take a trip to Buffalo Range, pm me & we can take a drive, or I can meet you there on a Saturday. It's a drive, but worth it. I need to put a few rounds through my Cetme, Mini-14, Remington 1187, Swiss K-31, Mossberg 500, M-1 Garand, etc.

last week I target shot at IL gun works in Elmwood park. Yesterday I was in the neighborhood so I stopped at Chucks Gun Shop in Dolton. I typically shoot at Maxon which is in desplaines, but is indoor so only good for handguns, although they do allow rifles. For rifles, I have been shooting at Bristol WI, but it's only out to 200 yards.

The where to shoot website listed above is a good resource, unfortunately I think it could be a little more complete in the data it collects and displays. Having said that I can sadly not find any 300+ yard ranges anywhere "near" by. I define near as less than 75 miles from where I live, which is the North side of the city.

Bells has been closed awhile. Gun World got shut down last year but is re-opening in Lyons I think. Then again this thread is old, but I brought it back to life because I think it's still valid.

If you're up for the drive, the best place I have found is in Eagle, WI. It's called McMiller Sports Center. They've got a 25 yard, 50 yard, 100 yard, 300 yard range, plus trap/skeet shooting too!

For me, it's less than an hour away. So, it's perfect!

If you ever need a range partner, send me a PM. I'm always willing to meet new folks on the range.

Cheers!

I took a look at their website several months ago and was supposed to head that way with a friend, but he pulled out at the last minute. I think he thought it was too cold, since it was winter at the time.

CGS,

I was there just yesterday. Lots of guys were sighting-in their bolt-actions for the upcoming deer season.

FYI...they close during deer season for about a week. But, then they open up again. This should be posted on their website.

I've been getting up there about 1-2 times per month lately. Obviously, with winter approaching, this will slow me down. As such, I'll probably head indoors for pistol shooting. But, next year I'll be out there again.

Send me a PM if you want to meet up there. Weekends are best.

Happy shooting!
