I have at least one of each length and prefer the 18.0" for general purpose, all around rifle shooting. Definitely go with the 22.0" barrel if you will be shooting beyond 750 yards often. Also, the selection and installation of assorted muzzle devices & GLFS bases is better with the 18.0" & 22.0" barrels.

I realize this post is several years old, but it happened to come to my attention again and I want to make a point.

The new bolt that was given to me was defective, according to Springfield. I got a new one back, but it still jammed. One time it jammed so bad the extractor got caught up on a brass and yanked out from the bolt. I sent it back again, but haven't tried it out yet. I wonder if they chamber is too tight--maybe I should ask them to polish it... I don't think the service department has tried that. Either way, this rifle is a POS and it is a major hassle to keep sending it back.

Since I no longer have an M14, I sold the SOCOM. My 308 'battle' rifle is an Ishapore 2A1, until I find an AR10 type I like.
