Newly Acquired National Match M1 Garand
Greetings,
I just received the 2nd of two rifles that were given to me following the passing of my father-in-law. The first was a National Match M1A (9102) brand new in the box (blessed ) and now I just picked up the second rifle which is a National Match M1 Garand which obviously is NOT brand new in the box . Anyways, I'm slowly learning about the rifle and did a basic serial number search since Springfields database doesn't cover rifles built that far back. I had heard that there is a company who can do a full serial number history search of the rifle to tell you just about everything you would ever want to know but I don't know who it is. The rifle means alot to me since it is really the only thing I have left to remember him and I would like to know as much about its history as I can. Additionally, I would like to know who did the National Match build on the rifle Springfield or the U.S. Military and which branch.
I have looked at just about every reference I can about the production year etc. but finding information on the NM Version of the M1 Garand is far more challenging than I would of thought.
Lastly, the stock shows a little bit of wear from hand placement but the rest looks amazingly good. Would any of you suggest using some BLO and 0000 Steel Wool to clean it up or just leave it as is?
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.
