Jeff Cooper's 1997 "Firearms and Personal Defense" Lecture in San Diego

In 1997 Jeff Cooper gave an hour long lecture on "Firearms and Personal Defense" at the 15th Annual Meeting of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness.

It's outstanding!

Sooner or later, someone is going to say, 'Thank you!' So let me be the first! I listened to the whole speech; and enjoyed every word.

You're Welcome!

I was so pleased when I first watched it and found the entire hour was of Jeff Cooper. I enjoyed every word as well. I wish there were more videos of him like this.

Yes. I found this video to be remarkable, too, because it shows a much older, much more frail and infirm a Jeff Cooper than the strong, physically confident man I remember from my youth.

He did have quite a wit about him, though, didn't he! Live long enough and it happens to us, all, doesn't it.

I started writing to Jeff in 1973, and was at the Columbia Conference when we first set up the IPSC. I have heard many tales about him from Mike Harries, Mike Dalton, Kenny Hackathorn, Rick Miller, Raul Walters, Dick Thomas, Bruce Nelson, Milt Sparks, and others. Mas Ayoob was not present, by the way. I have probably exchanged a score of letters with Jeff, and while he often had all the personality of an armpit, he is sorely missed.

While almost all said in this video is of course quite correct, the N. Hollywood example was a poor one. I doubt that many of the cops realized that the punks were armored, and a great many of the cops were firing from great distance, (for head hits). Also, practice and competition are done while wearing ear protection. A smart man carries ear plugs if he goes armed, and does so where he can get them into his ears swiftly. It takes no longer than the average guy needs to reload a revolver with a speed loader. Certainly, it can be done when you have cover, you outnumber the enemy by 10 to 1 or more, and your buddies are distracting the enemy's fire, for MANY minutes! Sheesh.

Jeff confuses the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution, too. The Constituion doesn't contain much of the language that Jeff "quotes".
