Does anyone know or use a stout .45 colt load. Not in h110/w296/2400 something a little less than those but no slouche. I'm loading in redhawk so no worries of kaboom. Already got h110 loads but looking for something a little lighter and you shouldn't download with h110.
I don't get you you'll act like a jerk one minute then try to be helpful the next. Anyway ya Ive tried alot of those with h110 and w296 with cast performance but I'm trying to figure a strong medium load that don't require such a touchy powder. Do you reload the .45 colt ?
I printed off some of the hodgdon already. I gues what I should have posted was if anyone tried diff loads in the 4 inch redhawk .45 colt. and check with chrony, accuracy etc. But thank you I'll check out that alliant soon.
I load for the 45 Long Colt, but use a rifle and not a Ruger since I live in a gun unfriendly state. I find that AA5744 works well, but you need a longer barrel to shoot. It would probally clog up a pistol with unburned powder. Have you seen MD Smith's Web Site: Reloading the .45 Colt Page
I have used Trail Boss, AA No 5, AA No 9, Bullseye, and have been meaning to try H4227. My dad prefers AA No 9 for his 45 Colt Ruger Black Hawk.
Hey thanks I never seen that. I'll book mark it and refer to it sometime. I just got back from vacation and am currently busy with the rest of my summer class and its crunch time, but I will make note of it to refer to in the future as I got 1000 new starline brass sittin here for 3 weeks now lol. So much to do arrrg
Yes, I understand the being busy part. I processed 500 empties over the weekend. I use Starline as well. Its much heavier. I have bunch of rifles. But my modified Rossi is the one I shoot the most. It shoots well and is very smooth. I can run 10 rounds through the thing in a hurry. If you find a powder that works well for you, please share. Most don't like to share data because what works for one may not work for another. But I can certainly look up data on any powder. I have wondered how stout a load the Rossi could handle, but when I need a big gun I pull out the Marlin 1895G. A heavy load in that will rattle your brain.
Speaking Marlin I was in the gun shop today picking up a bayonet for an sks and I noticed They had a guide gun in .450 marlin. I asked him to look at it he handed it to me I was looking it over and said "still havn't found a stainless huh ?" He said "actually I forgot you wanted one but guess what, I got one traded in today" he walked over behind his other counter and pulled one out in 45-70. I looked it over: it was in excellent shape and it had JM on the barrel. I thought oh boy and asked how much. He said not for sale and I asked what ? not for sale ? The bastard said he was gonna put it in his personal collection. I kept prying and he eventually said to lay 10 one hundred dollar bills on the counter and he might sell it. I said you might as well keep it, I want one but not that bad. Anyway I loaded up some 300 grain cast performance with 22 grains of h110 and some 300 grain speer jsp with 20 grns of h110 but I havnt even chrono-ed or tested for accuracy. I also made some 255 grn magnus swc with 25grns of h110 didn't chrono but shot to test accuracy and made 4 inch groups at 25 yrds but was high. They recoiled damn good too, had to lock my wrist.
A little off topic, but when I got back from Iraqi freedom my wife bought me a Marlin 1895G that was barely used for $350. Mine has the ported barrel. Can't replace it for that. Thanks for the welcome. I have read the posts on here for years but never took the time to reply. I was thinking of trying some H110 in my 45 LC. I have a ****load of 200 grain lead, and 250 Hornady JHP's. I haven't tried any of the heavier bullets yet. But will.
Wow that's a steal. I wish I could find those deals. My father got a Winchester 94 in .450 marlin, about 4 years back for that same price off a guy that got in trouble here. The guy accidentally trapped a minx and just let it go or discard it or something and didn't report it. Turns out the warden's knew about it and he lost his rights to ever hunt or trap again in any state and could not own firearms anymore. The guy's lodge he stayed at was my fathers friend that's how dad got notified of the gun. The guy sold all his stuff off real cheap just before he was fully prosecuted. The damn thing only had two boxes of shells through it. It's called a timber carbine its a nice piece. We always been into Winchesters but lately I've been looking at alot of marlins, to bad I'm late in the game now there all remlined.
My friend works at the Remington Factory for Bushmaster. He said when they transferred production of the Marlins, the machines had all been tampered with and it took a long time to get the production back up correctly. Central New York really sucks for jobs and a large part of the factory was idle. I like the Winchesters too, my dad has a couple. I like the idea of a pistol cartridge in a lever gun. I think I will buy some H110 for 45 Colt and give it a try. I will ask my dad first if he has any. Back to work.
Ive heard all kinds of rumors about the switch online and local but they all say to wait awhile before trying to buy a new marlin or remline, whatever you wanna call it. I guess we will see eventually.
Got a chance to test out 20 some each of my cast performance loads. Both were using cast performance 300 grn LFNGC .452 diameter with cci 350 primer.
H110 22 grns FPS low: 1100 (even) FPS high: 1224
H110 23 grns FPS low: 1158 FPS high: 1248
1 grain didn't seem to make much a difference in velocity but the recoil did I think I'm gonna back them down to maybe 20 or 21 grns. I don't dare to go below 20 with h110 and a 300 grn bullet. I know I should man up lol. But what good is it if you are shooting high and after two cylinders start flinching and start getting blisters after 40 rounds. I started wearing those impact gun type gloves when firing this thing now lol but you can still feel it. Redhawk 4.20"
I am going to my dad's tonight to help him get his camper ready for Lake George. I will see if he has any H110. I think I will load a few with it. I bet I would get more velocity out my 20 inch barrel.
