revolver sight work

hello doc, i have an old S&W brazilin (1937) contract that had the barrel cut down to 4'' and a replacement sight installed sometime in it's history.
problem is the front sight is much too tall (ramp front with a heavy base) and needs milling to point of aim or an alternative front sight installed.

whatdaya think?

Milling is the most accurate way to do it, but you can do it at the range with a smooth cut file.

The math is easy enough, but Brownells makes it even easier - GunTech : Sight Correction Calculator - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools - BROWNELLS

You'll end up with a figure in the thousandths, so calipers will work well enough. You can also do it the old way of take a couple of swipes and shoot again to check the adjustment. Doing this will RAISE the point of impact. If some reason you're shooting to high, then material must be added to make the sight taller.

thanks, didnt know brownells had such a calculator, i will have to do somekind of milling, the heavy base ( a later model ramp with base) is as tall as the the top strap so the blade sticks up a good 1/4'' or so above the rear notch, who ever did the cut down alteration did a very nice job, perhaps the customer specified the larger sight becuase of poor eyesight in this regard and as a house gun it works well.

think you might have the time to tackle this for me Doc?

Sure, I can do that. The real issue is the overnight shipping back and forth - expect to pay at least $70 each way, plus the machine work. That's pretty expensive, but I leave that decision to you. I'll also need a target from you and the distance you shot it at. This'll let me accurately set th height for you. So... if you're still interested shoot me an email and we'll get it going. Thanks!

John

No problem....... I have a hard time justifying the price as well, but that's the way they make us do it. Use a file and go slow. you can lower it and thin it and a little cold blue will make it like new.
