new and just saying hi

hey all, sorry to start a new thread, but couldn't find another spot for new kids to just say hi and introduce ourselves. so yeah...
i'm major tom. i live in western NC and own the following (im bad about exact model numbers and the like. couldn't tell you without looking):
s+w 910 9mm
s+w .357mag highway patrolman
ruger .22lr semi-auto
marlin 30-30 lever
marlin 45/70 lever
12ga side by side
12ga single shot (i'll have to check make/model... it's an old one. my dad got it when he was 10 and hes about 62 now)

i'm in the market for a 12ga pump and something in an assault rifle, but i'll keep that to the market chat. pm if you have something i might be interested in or just want to say hi.

i invite any other new folks to piggyback here

good collection but you need to ditch that Ruger .22 and buy a Marlin/Glenfield. check 'marketplace' here for some firearms for sale.

Not yet. Still looks just like the picture on S&W's web page. Except for the 7 loaded magazines ready to go.

Welcome aboard major tom. The ruger 22 (aka 10/22) is one of the best 22lrs in my opinion. If you are in the market for an assault rifle you may look into the ruger mini 14. Most of us on here have one and I have to say it is one of the best guns I own.

the mini 14 has been highly recommended to me. i tend to salivate more over something like an ar-15, but i'm open to suggestions.

and yeah, i like my little .22. i can drive tacks with it at a pretty good distance.

AR's are accurate and do look cool but their reliabilty is so-so. The reason that so many on here have chosen the mini 14 is because of its reliabilty. There are some comlaints of accuracy on the older models but since ruger's retooling that has been improved. My mini will shoot less than 2 inches at 100 yards all day using open sights provided I do my part. Whatever decision you make, good luck.

Welcome aboard Tom. Both guns, the Mini and the AR family are more accurate than most shooters can shoot them, so in my book it's a wash.

If you are one of the "pimp-my-gun" crowd then by all means you will want the AR because there is so much cheap plastic crap out there to hang on an AR that it isn't funny - none of which makes them shoot any better. However, most AR's are lacking in long term relliability and they require a lot of TLC.

The Mini on the other hand, if you want to pimp it out, it can get expensive, but like the AR's, they usually don'g shoot any better. But when it comes to long term reliability, you can't beat the Mini. And it requires a lot less maintenance.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

The Ruger 10/22 is an outstanding reliable little .22, got 2 of em with no complaints.

Welcome to the forum, you've got a decent collection there!

thanks for the comments and the suggestions. dependability and ruggedness are certianly important to me. i take care of my weapons, but i am by no means an armorer and i don't like to have to fiddle with things to get them to work.
the more i look at the mini 14 the more i like it. seen some tricked out minis on the forum here. while i'm not into "pimping" there are some additions and changes that are attractive to me...

thanks again!
