Question shotgun barrel refinishing

I have a 20ga. bolt action mossberg that has pit marks on the barrel from rust. I wasn't sure on how to take care of it. Any suggestions?

Use a Scotch-brite pad and remove the rust and bluing from the barrel. then get a Blue Wonder bluing kit (about $25) and follow the directions to refinish the barrel. It's easy to do and a whloe cheaper than hot bluing. If the rust pits are really deep you will need to draw file. You can polish the barrel, but do not use any rouge, the Blue Wonder will not adhere properly. I have done many old guns this way and they look great.

Thanks the other gunsmith I talked to told me to use dura coat, but that looked more like paint than finish.

I do DuraCoat here, and it is a fine product, but the Blue Wonder will look just like hot blue. On any parts that are an alloy, it may not work as well. It comes in Blue, and Black. Both will look black, but the black color is a matte finish. Use the blue and match it up. You can apply several coats, and if it doesn't quite make it apply some more. A propane torch or heat gun is helpful, but you can do Blue Wonder with a hairdryer.

Hey gundoc, is this blue wonder kit ok for touching up or better used for complete re-bluing?

It's good for both. There is a short video on the web showing you how to do it, but the printed instructions are well written. Just be sure to keep it heavily oiled for a week after it "sets" and you won't have any trouble. NRA did a write up on a year or so ago and really liked it. Blue Wonder was bought by Armor Holdings, the CLP folks, so you know it works.
