Been thinking about this rifle non-stop for a while, just wondering if anyone has anything to say about it. Also can't decide between .223 and .308. Farthest i would be shooting is 300 yards, and i like the idea of shared ammo with my Mini 14, but .308 seems like more fun (and more expensive). Thoughts?

I've got the 700 SPS Varmint in .308. I've been very happy with it and every 700 I've tried in the past (ADL, BDL, and CDLs). Haven't specifically handled or read up on the XCR you're looking at, but I would think you would do well with it.

As far as which round to go with....it really comes down to how you want to use the rifle, which you think you'd get more/better use out of, and what round YOU want. Personally, my preference would be for the .308. I've always been a fan of the larger/heavier rounds, particularly when going out past 200 yards. Lots of commercial load combos, plus virtually unlimited reloading possibilities. That being said (and depending on what you're shooting at), there's absolutely nothing wrong with the .223 at that range with the right loads.

I need money to buy things for my new place otherwise I wouldn't be selling it. I had the rifle in a Manners T5 with mini chassis so the original stock and bottom metal has been sold.

Mine was in .308. I'd say unless you're going to venture out past 600 yards go with a .223.

If you reload I would suggest knocking it out to 223 Ackley. If not, the factory 75 grain Hornady match or Superperformance should shoot pretty dang good at 300-600 yards.

That's ok, it may have cost me just as much to get the factory stock and bottom metal, i really like the way it comes stock. And i have pretty much decided on .223, not only can i hunt anything animal in NY state with it (although can't use a rifle on Long Island ), but it will be cheaper to practice with.

Just picked up the 308 XCR compact tactical. Very light good looking rifle. Hitting the range tomorrow so I'll let you know how it shoots.
