I was wondering why on some of my earlier posts I no longer see an "Edit" button. I can only see the "Quote" and "Quick Reply" button.
When I make an update to a firearm, instead of starting a new thread, I generally update the previous photo with a new one, and I also provide a post that gives some details about the changes made. The thread sort of becomes an activity log for that particular firearm.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I hope you can shed some light here.
I think you are going to have to ask Bill about this one. I do not think that editing is allowed after a certain amount of time but that is just a guess. I would go back and see if I had a button myself but we have different tools as a moderator so it wouldn't apply. Sorry if i couldn't give you a better answer. Anyone other mods care to chime in?

Hi Kevin, Just a follow up question to clarify your reply to alaj70's question on the editing of a members own posts.

If I understand the full implication of your reply correctly Perfectunion members now no longer have any right or ability to access their own posts in order to correct, edit or delete their own posts after 1 hour, is that correct?
Further to Walkenbear's question, if an hour is the limit, apparently Super Members get longer than Registered Members. I posted at 10:03 AM today in the Mini forum and still have the edit button available at almost 5:00 PM. Is the longer time a Super Member perk?
Each group can have its own settings for time allowed to edit a post, or if edits or deletions are allowed at all.
I set these up this way years ago when this was a pretty free-wheeling place. We had regular occurrences of flame wars where people were going back and editing their comments and claiming that they were innocent. In order to prevent this, I set it up so that quick edits within a short amount of time (you notice a typo, let's say) are allowed, but once it sets for a while, it's permanent. This prevents "Stalinizing" (i.e. the re-writing of history by those who want to make themselves look better).
Super Members have, for the most part, NEVER exhibited negative posting behavior. So I have different rules for them.
These policies may need to be fine tuned: For example, it makes sense to be allowed to delete a "For Sale" posting. Alternately, one could let anyone edit their posts at any time, but believe me, we'll have people trying to re-write history to cover their tracks.
I believe in the wisdom of "Measure Twice, Cut Once", and try to apply it to my posts. I hope that our participants can try and do the same.
If I might ask, what is the logic behind this? Why wouldn't you want everyone to be able to edit their posts?
To stop people from going back 2 months, 4 months, 6 months,,,,, after their post was made and adding links or other content.
Lets say that a member gets mad about something, goes back to some of their old post and adds images of nudity, or links to sites that install malware on peoples computers.
while I understand the concept of "not letting people go back to re-write history", is there a way to adjust that for the classified sections only?
as I just had to make another post to mark something SPF.
doesnt that just eat bandwidth? (of which I know nothing about)
oh, and if I get in a flame war, its because I'm right
thats a pain in the ass for us to be contacting yall everytime we need to modify a post.
there was a time I was active on some other boards. moderator and an administrator. its not a job I miss.
I do miss being able to go in and adjust friend's signatures and stuff without them knowing it.... hehehe
