I was looking for a 7-08 for a while and finally found a Remington Model Seven that shot very nice I also got a very nice price on. I just got done with the "Parkerized" Duracoat to get rid of the stainless steel and have 1 glaring issue left. Remington jeweled the bolt, I can't live with this. Is it possible to Parkerize the bolt (not Duracoat, true Parkerize)? The nearest gunsmith to me is about a 2 hr drive so I don't want to drive all the way down there only to have him say "nope, can't be done". Has anyone done this? And before I get flamed for this let me say my wife and I sit on the deck during Elk and Deer season and pick out the hunters working the ridges from up to about 1 mile away by the flash and glare from the stainless if I can see this with the worthless eyes of a human the Elk and Deer can easily pick it up from a lot farther away which is why this rifle is going through the complete flat/no glare finish treatment.

It might be a better idea to have the bolt blued. This will stop any reflection. You will still see the jeweling, but it will not be bright and it looks pretty nice. If you have it blued, make sure to have it hot blued in bluing salts, not the do it yourself bluing which will quickly wear off. Parkerizing will make the bolt rough. If you don't want to have it blued, you could have it coated with one of the bake on finishes.

I am going to have Colorado School of Trades/Gunsmithing do it. I've seen their work and everything so far has been top notch, just a whole lot less $$. Plus I talked to 4 local Smiths and they all said they wouldn't do it, the jeweling is there for a reason and they won't "destroy" a rifle. Wrong answer seeing as I OWN IT. All the bluing I have seen has a very glossy finish which is why I was thinking Parkerizing, is there a way for them to blue but eliminate the gloss?

I graduated from CST in 1999. It is a great school. To dull down the bolt, you could request that they bead blast or sand blast the body of the bolt first prior to bluing. Sand blasting would give the dullest finish. Be sure to specify that the handle and locking lugs be covered with heavy tape prior to bead blasting the bolt body or tube unless you want the entire bolt to look the same, in any case the bolt head should be covered.
