Coyote hunting with red dot

My uncle has talked me into doing some coyote hunting with him. I'd like to use my Mini-14, which is currently sporting a Millet SP-1 red dot in a scout configuration. Anyone ever hunted coyotes with a red dot, and does it work well? Or should I think about a 4x or so handgun optic?

It sounds like a good combination, you can shoot with both eyes open and follow the shots and the game.
