My Savage Model 12 BVSS .223

I'm a Mini-14 fan but decided to try a bolt action and purchased a Savage Model 12 FVSS .223.

I soon found that the "plastic" stock was so flexible I really had to work at keeping the gun from moving while/after I pulled the trigger. I purchased the factory laminated stock to convert the FVSS into a BVSS and solved that problem.

The Savage Model 12 composite stock is called a "Tupperware" stock by some shooters because it's so flexible (I have one for sale if you want it).

The image below was taken while on a Prairie dog hunt in South Dakota. The strange thing mounted on the scope is a homemade 450mm video camera connected to my laptop computer.

I threaded the barrel and installed a homemade muzzle brake patterned after the Howitzer artillery piece, The brake really takes out the muzzle jump and enables me to see the bullet impact (a 2,900 fps, 60gr V-MAX vs Prairie dog through a 24X scope is interesting).

The target below shows a three-shot, .535" group at 254yds! Need I say more? :D

Couple questions for ya...

Can you post a few closeups of the brake?

What optics did you put on it?

Just curious, as I have the same rifle in .204 Ruger...

I can get 3 bullets in one overlapping hole at 100... sometimes I will hang up dimes and blow them away when I feel like showing off to others at the range... LOL

It doesn't surprise me to see a .535 group at 250! These rifles SHOOT!

I hear that the .204 Ruger will ruin a Prairie dog's day!

The scope is a BSA Contender 6-24 X 40 -- IMO, it is a good inexpensive scope for the Savage .223 (My Mini-14 killed the first Contender that I bought and this one is the free factory replacement).

The muzzle brake is stainless steel and is two pieces.

Specifications are:


O.D., 1.275"
Length, 2.025"
Side slot, .830" X .635"
Front hole, .250"
Barrel thread, 1/2" X 28 tpi (5/8" would better suit the 3/4" barrel)

As you can see in the second picture, there is a sleeve that can be rotated to close the side discharge slot. A spring detent ball and o-rings hold the sleeve open or closed.

The side blast from this muzzle brake is hideous so I can close it if shooting with someone nearby. I never shoot with a muzzle brake unless I have really good hearing protection.

WOW nice setup on the brake!!

I have a BSA platinum on mine... Its an 8-32 power. I haven't shot the rifle in close to a year, so I forget what size objective it has... but I agree... decent optics for the price... although lately Barska has been filling that niche for me quite well.
