View Full Version : Which Hand Guard
I have a 181 series Mini and wanted to put a hand guard on it. I don`t intend to mount a scope, i`m just going to use the iron sights and wanted to know who makes the best guards and what material is best. Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

whats wrong with the stock handguard unless you are looking to mount something on it?
if you are looking for accuracy improvement go with ultimak, its made of aliminium and it just as light if not lighter then the factory plastic handguard.
I don`t have the factory plastic, mines wood. Is the Ultimak a vented guard that doesn`t have the rail for scope mounting ?

no, the ultimak has about a 3/4 rail on the top. I would say that if you are looking for an aftermarket guard to go with something metal to help the heat if you dont want a rail... I went with the ultimak just because I wanted the option of mounting an optic (which i did) and it really does help the heat. if you want to see some close up pics I have mine up here: http://www.perfectunion.com/vb/showthread.php?t=64410
I like your Mini and it would be a good set up for hunting. I just wanted something besides the wood. I`d like to find something that`s ventilated and a low profile so I can use my iron sights.
if your selling your wood one I would like to buy it.
I just put a Choate on my mini and really like it. More cooling slots and the unsightly cover over the op rod is gone. Its also lighter than the factory.Think it cost me $13.00 plus shipping. Frank

The Choate is the way to go. It looks sweet and makes the Mini look more M14 like. It reminds me of the early M14 vented handguard.
Sorry prc77 but i`m keeping it.
Who did ya order the Choate from ?

Choate is the best looking handguard out there...besides the Ultimak! Looks good, more slots for cooling, can't beat it.

what`s your opinion on the factory ventilated guard ?

There's nothing wrong with the factory guard...I just like the Choate guard better. Primarily because of the added vent slots.

Anyone tried to add vent slots to the factory guard that looks good ?

I haven't tried to add any slots but I'm sure anything can be done if you put enough, time effort and $$$ into it. To me the thing that makes the choate 10x cooler is that it doesn't cover the op-rod, like a real M14. It would be difficult to do to a stocker and have it look decent.

I got the fiberglass one from Delta Force. I believe its similar to the Choate. I is much more vented than the stock one, and it looks better. Don't throw the wood guard away, someone will buy it from you.

Does it have a liner like the stock factory Ruger handguards? I haven't had any problems with the Choate, but I like the idea of the metal liner.
