I believe the finish that was on the gun was in part, dried out cosmoline. I use the diswasher cleaning method using cascade. I let it dry for a couple of days and sand it with fine paper. I then stain the stock, after it is dry you can use the tung oil finish. I prefer a shiny finish so I use birchwood casey true oil, about 15 coats. In any case, if you want a uniform color on the stock you might think about a dark walnut stain. I have tried posting pictures on this forum but cannot, I would be glad to send pictures of some of the guns I have refinished. Mosin, sks, winchester. Marlin.

Hi Guys,
I'm a new member and saw your post about the Mosin Nagant. I am currently trying to find an M91/30 for my Dr. and maybe one for myself as well. After doing some research on this jewel I'm pretty worked up about building at least one of these if I can find one which is obviously my question within my comment, where can I find one of these? I have some other questions as well such as the 7.62x54 Russian cartridge. Is this brass specific to this 7.62x54 or can I use any 7.62x54 brass to load? And is there other brass that can be made to work as I'm an accomplished reloader(30+ years).
Thanks,
Gamestalker

you need to load 7.62x54R brass (the "R" stands for rimmed) dosen't matter if it's Russian, US, Chicom -whatever just has to be 7.62x54R.
