Just wanted to let everyone know there is a very interesting article in the September issue of S.W.A.T. magazine on pg 66 titled ".223 vs. 5.56".
I know that the Mini-14 can fire both but I am also wondering if the reason for the Mini-14 being inaccurate is due to the chamber differences between the two rds? Is the Mini chambered for 5.56 or .223? Or is it chambered for .223 and that the quality of materials allow for the higher pressures of the 5.56 rd?
I am just beginning to attempt to understand cartridge dimensions and chamber measurements so I am not one to answer these questions.
Any opinions?

Try the search, this has come up before. I do know that some .223 guns recommend no 5.56 my H&R Survivor is one.

The search has only provided we with information about the cartridges themselves. No one has written about the chamber measurements of the Mini-14 compared to say the AR-15 chamber, which is specifically designed for the 5.56mm rd. I read in his article that reaming a .223 to 5.56 did not do much for or against accuracy. I am just curious.
The min-14 Target is another, according to Ruger customer service. They say 5.56 is fine in the regular mini but not the Target due to tighter tolerances.

The primary difference between .223 Remington and 5.56 x 45 mm is that .223 is loaded to lower pressures and velocities compared to 5.56 mm. .223 Remington ammunition can be safely fired in a 5.56 mm chambered gun, but the reverse can be an unsafe combination. The .223 chambering, known as the "SAAMI chamber", is allowed to have a shorter leade, and is only required to be proof tested to the lower SAAMI chamber pressure. The Mini 14 has a 5.56 chamber. The AR-15 is not necessarily chambered for the 5.56. Many manufacturers chamber it for the .223 for the civilian market. As a matter of fact, most commercial AR-15's are chambered for the .223 round.

The only difference dimensionally between a 5.56 chamber and the .223 chamber is the amount of throat lead in. The 5.56 chamber has a slightly longer throat. This usually doesn't have much effect on accuracy in most cases. The term "lead in" is also known as "free bore". This is the distance the projectile has to "jump" before it engages the rifling. The less "free bore" supposedly the better the accuracy. In reality, it doesn't make much difference until you start talking about precision shooting past 500 yards.

As mentioned before the difference between the rounds is freebore or throat. As long as you shoot no longer than 55 grain rounds it really doesn't matter how the chamber is throated. When you go to the longer rounds (62, 77 gn, etc) the longer round engages the rifling and can compress the round into the powder charge raising pressures to above recommended levels. So, you can shoot 5.56 military rounds of 55 gn weight in a rifle chambered for .223 Rem. Do not try to shoot the 62 gn or heavier 5.56 rounds in a firearm chambered for .223 Rem. The best way to check your weapon is to seat a round in an uncharged and un primed case. Chamber the cartridge and remove it and measure total length. Make sure all subsequent ammo you use is less than this total length.
