Not knowing yet where to post that I am a first time poster (just registered today), thought I would do so here.

Being new to handgunning, I just bought my first, a Springfield Armory XD-40, earlier this week, but won't get it until next Monday because of a shipping snafu. I am interested in reading some pros and cons about the XD from those that have used it. I did significant reading, researching, visiting gun shops, and heming and hawing around before deciding on the XD-40.

I also have been trying to search the forum for previous posts but apparently have not yet learned how that function works (keep getting a message about my search topic being less than four words or something like that).

Soooooo, again, for those that have used the XD who would like to offer their comments, please lay it on me. And thanks. :)

Welcome aboard! I've been a here a while, but still haven't mastered searches or introductions, but they haven't kicked me out yet :)

Here's a thread I remember that might give you some insight: http://www.perfectunion.com/vb/showthread.php?t=59994

They've also recently introduced a version with a frame-mounted safety. I think this is what a recent magazine called "mil-spec," but just saw the cover, didn't read the article. There were posts here about it, but I haven't found them yet.

Finally, there are at least a couple of other lefties here, so adding "lefty," "ambi," or "ambidextrous" might get you more in-depth knowledge.

OK, found the other thread: http://www.perfectunion.com/vb/showthread.php?t=61571 Not much info here other than the link to the XD site with the photo.

I think you'll be happy with the XD. Preferences are preferences (and often strong), but I've rarely heard or read anyone anyone saying it's inaccurate, fails to go bang when the trigger is pressed, or is overpriced.

Joe G and Sticks, thank you both for responding with the info. I just read your posts so will wait until tomorrow morning to start reading as it is getting to be my bedtime. Old folks like me need their rest. :D

I really would like to begin reading now but am tired after a long day.

I appreciate you taking time to find and send the information. :)

I have an xd45. Great gun, goes bang when I pull the trigger, only one fail to feed/cycle with a light load factory reload out of around 3k rounds so far. Accurate, fun gun. The sights are a little different than other guns so you might shoot low at first or maybe not.

Went back to Glock for a few reasons:

High bore axis made the gun really top heavy compared to a comparable model Glock.

If any parts need to be replaced, you get to ship it back to Springfield.

Mine was a Subcompact model, and the grip on the glock is MUCH shorter in the SC model.

A comparison of mine to my Glock, both with extended mags. The grip makes the gun harder to conceal.

I've shot an XD-40 and the one I shot was pretty accurate with white box ammo. I didn't have to clean it, so I can't comment about tear down or internals. It's a bit more zippy than a metal pistol, but not enough to bother about.
I think you'll find it's a pretty good pistol that your happy shooting with.

I have a XD 45 service and love it. Bone stock XD compared to my G20C with 3.5# connector, the XD has a nicer trigger.
The duty gear that comes with it is kinda cheesey.
Nice pick for a first gun.

i bought an XD45 when they first came out , love it, went out and bought an XD SC 40 AS WELL. both are super guns no complaints from me and i have a few autos to my name. one day there may be a glock in the mix as well. for now its XD FOR ME.
i have a chevy but will settle for a ford.

I have the XD45. It's what I carry all the time now. Field stripping is mongo easy. All that I've shot, in every caliber and every configuration, can keep a whole magazine of ammo in an area the size of my palm.

I've owned Glocks too. And a 1911. And S&W. And a multitude of others. The XD isn't quite as comfy as my 1911 but is much more so for ME than any other .45 with a 13-round magazine.

Be happy with your purchase!

Jon

I bought a NIB XD45 service model when they first came out. I had the 2nd one imported into CA at the time. I took it out and shot 500 rounds through it for break in and comfort prior to qualifying with it for duty carry. The triger safety was defective and over-traveled into the recess causing a cut on my finger. I traded it the same day to a guy for a Ruger SP101. That was MY error. I should ahve sent it back to springfield as it was a defect in the first series of guns and they would have fixed it. Every XD I have fired since then has been great.

My wife now carries a XD9 subcompact as a CCW gun and we both love to shoot it. I recomend them highly to anyone. One of the things you will like as a lefty is the ambi mag release.

Remember, guns are like cars. Some just prefer Ford over Chevy "just because". You will know more after you fondle it and shoot it.

I have an XD 45 service model and its my first pistol. Never failed to fire and has about 250 rounds through it. You can strip it in a snap, probably like 10 or 15 seconds. im happy with it.

FYI i picked up a Glock in 45acp the other day and the grip is crap IMO.

Fine pistol. I don't have one but have shot one a bit. I was really surprised that the hype about fitting your hand seemed justified. But every hand is different. The trigger take up is a little longer on the XD which can be a little unusual, but is notably smoother.

I nearly gave up on my Glocks as the trigger pull is so goofy I never was able to get used to it until I put in 3.5 pound disconnectors. The majority of the weird feel I think is from the drag on the firing pin safety. There are now spring kits to help this out. www.brownells.com has them. With the 3.5's I think the trigger is about on par.

By the way, beware of the grip extensions on subcompact Glocks. Because of the recoil transferring to the pinky finger, and the short length of the grip, it wiggles the mag in the housing and wears out the mag release. The part is like $3, but when it begins to fail, the mag will sit lower, and cause feeding problems. Better to just get a Glock 23. Or at least keep an eye on it.

I've had mine since 2003. Great gun, not problems, shoots all the time. Carry in a Blackhawk Serpa for work.
Really a nice feel and balance for me. Easy to clean. Disassemble in 30 seconds and about the same to put it back together. Put a Hogue grip on it and it really made the draw and grasp more positive and solid.

On a second thought on my last comment on glocks...I have only handled the 45acp version...I have not handled a Glock 17 which might have a great grip for all i know. In the end you cant go wrong with any of them...just get a gun that fits your hand and isnt crap.

I started with a XD-40 4" service model and have since added a XD-9 sub-compact. I love mine but IMO you can't go wrong with any of the comparable brands. :)

I did a ton of research before I bought my XD-.45acp - never read a bad review by anyone - even the magazine expert/critics luv'd it - one of which was a Glock-lifer who after shooting the XD, then went out & bought 3 of 'em for his own personal arsenal . . . it wasn't selected Handgun of the Year for nuthin' - huh? ;)

I am still doing research on what pistol to get and the only bad things I have heard on the XP’s are the finish and rust issue that I hear is resolved with newer items and one guy at the local range has a problem with the grip safety not disengaging with his particular hand so he traded it in for a glock. I am leaning to the XP myself.

Almost bought a brand new stainless XD45 the other day. Fits *very* comfortably in my hand. I'm not a hardcore handgun guy, but when it comes to handguns I've always been a believer in the 1911. But after handling the XD (apologies to the wonderful 1911) if I ever do get me a pistol this is the one I'll get.

I really dont know how you can screw up the grip safety on the xd...unless you dont have a thumb or something. I would have to see this guy hold it in person to believe that.

Well, its what the guy said. I agree with you that its hard to see how he would have a problem but you never know. I didn’t notice lack of digits on his hands.

What sold me on the XD is the loaded chamber indicator along with the "cocked" striker indicator which both allow the shooter to "feel" their status as opposed to having a visual status only. Good for low or no light situations.

I also like the grip safety as it sort of forces the shooter to hold the weapon correctly besides having to be depressed before allowing it to fire.
