I can only afford to buy one handgun for at least 2 years, my rifles put me broke. I am a young gun owner and have no handguns yet. I want a full size pistol in .45 acp. I want a large capacity so no 1911. I am considering a Glock 21 based on the reputation of thyem. I want a black tactical pistol and am pretty set on the glock but am open to suggfestions. The price of the Glock is 600 and i woulkd like to stick to that. Any ionfo would be appreciated.
Based on your specs, the G21 is a fine choice. I've had one for over a year now and it has become my preferred belt gun. Out-of-the-box accuracy was excellent. Reliability has been flawless. I've shot a 13rd mag with a mixture of 230gr ball, 185gr JHP, 230gr JHP, and 200gr +P with no malfunctions.
You'll be pleased, I think.

G21,...it's grip is also like holding a brick.:o
IF, I could have only one pistol......
I would choose a Glock 19.

Im sure all glocks are fine weapons i just like the .45 better since i only can get one and qould like to maximixe my firepower. Id like to get my hands on some of those 25 round mags.
The Glock grip angle doesn't work well for all of us. That's why I've been carrying the M&P and just added a M&P45 fullsize to my collection. Next will be the M&P45 compact when it's available.

I have the G21 and have short stubby fingers, but have no problem with it. Of course now they come out with the G21sf, and S&W have the M&P45. I need much more money, and more hands to play with them all.
:beer::rapid:
I've owned 2 glocks a #22 and #19 both great guns not as durable as my KP-95 ruger but my choice for when the SHTF would be my CZ-75B. Rain, shine ,mud, snow good ammo, cheap ammo 95 gr. to 147 gr. never a failure to function.I've paid alot more money for alot less gun.......

What about a 1911 with a double-stack magazine like from Para Ordnance?

I've heard stories of Glock 21s in Portland practically exploding in the hands of the shooter. Reliability is one thing, risk of detonation is another.
Personally my vote is for a H&K USP. If you have the big hands to hold it, it's an incredible gun (personally I'm a .40 man). Also recommend the Springfield XD, got to fire one a few weeks ago and I think I'm in love.

The .45 is an excellent caliber. I only chose the 9mm Glock because I can unload a 15 round magazine in about 8 seconds at 10 yards, and keep all my hits in an area the size of a soft ball.
In a shoot out situation I was always taught to get as much lead out, accurately, as quickly as possible, to put your opponent down. I can't do that with a .40 or .45. The recovery time for follow up shots is too long. I've tried.

WHOA, I have never heard of a G21 exploding... I was foolish enough to shoot lead bullets through my G21 but the only thing that happened was failure to fire when the firing pin channel got plugged up. Cleaned it up and it was OK afterward
Can you elaborate?

You might want to consider the Glock G17 9MM , if I had to pick one , the G17 would be it , 17 round magazine , and allso 33 glock factory mags fits most if not all Glock 9mm pistols , that's A lot fire power , that's that much longer you can stay in the fight , compaired to 12 or 13 rounds of the G21 , and ammo is much cheaper in 9mm compaired to 45 acp or 40 S+W , I know I have the 40 and 45 allso , big difference in price .
+1 to saturn 9 on the para choice. But another good choice in the glock family would be a 35. It's a .40 I know but more ammo cap in a smaller package. Also the 180 grn .40 and the 180 grn .45acp have almost the same performance. Just my 2 cent.;)

The XD45 fits my hand better, is less expensive than the G21, has the same magazine capacity, and you have a choice of 4" or a 5" barrel. Like the G21, you get two mags and a loader, plus a cheap holster.
Supposedly, later this year, Springfield is going to release an XD45 with a 16-round capacity!

JMHO, but I've fired the Glocks and I prefer the XD. I have a XD45 5" Tactical, a XD45 4", and a XD9. ZERO PROBLEMS. The Glocks are nice pistols, just not for me. Either one would be a good choice.
Just a suggestion, but I would advise you to buy a couple boxes of ammo, go to a pistol range and find someone with these pistols and shoot them.

I believe you are correct, but that is the XD-M, and the magazines are different. They will not interchange with the regular XD's. Also the "M" is going to be more expensive, probably above his price range.
For me it's the SA XD-9mm 4" service. Or..maybe the .40, of course you can't go wrong with the mighty .45!
I couldn't choose one! Sorry!!!! :P
I've got 3 glocks, 19,21 and 23 for carry. The 21 is a good choice

 Here's a classic example of what I hate about the internet - Disinformation!
What happened in Portland is never going to happen again. Portland's G-21 problems were BOTH ammunition AND pistol related. All current 3rd generation Glock G-21's are presently fitted with #4256-1 trigger bars. The G-21's trigger bar problem has been completely solved for almost 2 years now.
If you don't think that H&K's explode take a trip over to The Gun Zone. They've got some lovely pictures of kaBoomed! H&K pistols. Since the trigger bar upgrade, my own G-21's have upwards of 6,000 rounds through them. In the past 2 years neither one has so much as hiccuped.
Personally I like the wide backstrap on a G-21; it softens the recoil for me. If the BOTTOM of your trigger finger's distal joint extends past the trigger's face when it is in the forward position; and, you do not have to shift your grip in order to release the magazine, then, the pistol fits your hand - Period. ;)
For the money, I would suggest at least looking at an FN Herstal FNP-45. You just might fall in love. 14-round mag. I have an FNP-40 and it's my fave by far. I recently purchased a .45 and happened to have the extra $$$ (sorta) to go ahead with getting a Sig P220 (and bought a couple of 10-round mags), but if I'd been on more of a budget, I would have definitely bought the FNP-45 instead. I'm also a leftie and the FN handguns are very southpaw-friendly.

Ahhhhhh get a cz 52, if you don't hit em, you will burn the hair right off their head with the flame and he will go off screaming like a banshee. He will be easy to spot in a line-up, lol

Then you stick a lot of other disclaimers. If you are willing to drop the "black tactical" then look closely at the S&W 4506. I prefer the 1006 (10mm).
Going price for a good 4506 is $400.

I have the G21 and the XD 45, both are exellent choices in my OP.
I think the oversized chamber of the Glock gives it an edge on reliability, my XD has occasional issues with LSWC bullet profiles. The larger grip on the G21 gives alot of surface area for your support hand to contact too.
You can also buy a conversion bbl to shoot 10mm out of the G21 later on down the road.:D

I like your choice of Glock. Theye're great pistols. I would offer though that, with ammunition costs as they are, that you consider a 9mm so you can practice, practice, practice.

I have seen those before and I like them. Honestly, Denzel's character in Training Day uses the S&W 4506 and that is what turned me on to them. Are they still manufactured? I could not find them on the Smith and Wesson website, nor on the website for my local gun shop.

If this is your first handgun and the only one you are going to have for a while, then go with a Glock. Glocks are accurate, dependable and near indestructible. They have few parts, which make break down and cleaning very easy. Less parts also means less problems, that is why revolvers are so dependable. Due to this being your first and only gun for a while you will have to develop gun cleaning and lubricating habits. The Glock makes this super easy. I am a law enforcement officer and I would not carry any thing else. I bought my first Glock (a G17) when I was 21 and still have it 10 years later. I currently own 4 Glocks; G22 and G27, which I carry on duty and a G29 that I carry for personal protection (the G19 usually stays home). I hope this helps.

Do yourself a favor and get the XD .45acp.
+1 on the XD .45ACP - on which I've done a ton of research & never found a negative review or even any unsavory comments for that matter. Several said it was the best gun ever fired right outta the box.
Almost continously since 1966, I've owned & carried several Glocks, S&W, & Colt pistols & revolvers in various calibers & loads - .38 spcl., 9mm, .357, .45ACP - p, +p, & +p+, (etc., etc. & ya-da, ya-da, ya-da) while in the military for 10+ years & federal law enforcement for 20+ years . . . blah, blah, blah - the bottom line is that the XD .45ACP 4" w/230 gr. JHP +P Gold Dot is the only gun that I now carry by my own choice on a daily basis (CCW) & still shoot at least once a week. Yeah, even still with my tired ol' peepers - (had to break down & get a laser sight to keep a nice tight group) . . . 'nuff said - probably too much!
One review in a major gun rag was by a rather prominent self-identified died-in-the-wool Glock-o-phile, who, after testing the XD, went out & bought not one, not two, but - yes, three XDs with his own money . . . & . . . he's the so-called expert - not me! <_<
