I been thinking about A beretta 92 FS OR M9 to add to my small Ruger pistol collection , before if any future band comes , and ran into some Beretta factory mags at A fair price , but I don't now much about Beretta mags and was wondering if anyone here know more about them , I heard that some of the M9 Factory mags 15 rounders with the metal bottom had problems , and all so the factory Italian made mags says MDS factory , do yall know what MDS stands for ?

I never had problems with the factory 92FS magazines or quality aftermarket magazines while I carried my M9 in Iraq. Just stay away from the factory look-alikes that have absolutely no markings on them, I am sure you won't find them because those P.O.S's. are reserved for our military, but just in case...( I frequently had problems loading rounds in them because the spring was such a P.O.S. and it would fire two rounds if I was lucky before a malfunction) If you find some that are silverish with a flat bottom, those aren't bad, not top quality but at least they loaded and fired for me without a problem. (You may have problems finding those too as they are also for the military) Just remember to take care of your magazines.
BTW, just curious, why a 92FS and not something else, say better, for around the same price? Unless you are getting a super steal on one.

Thanks for the info. folks , I know yall wondering why I want A Beretta , well I did't , untill I ran in A deal , A m9 beretta brand new for $439 , my dealer had A couple an A couple 92 fs for $479 NIB , , I hate to pass up the M9 for that price , now I use to do A lot of target shooting with 9mm 's 45 acp and 38 spl./ 357 , an recently 40 S+W , but with the Price of ammo , 9mm is the way to go ' about half the price of the bigger calibers .most of my Pistols are Rugers an I like them very much , but I thought I try the Beretta for this price .

TG an STICKS , Are there any problems with the M9 , i know over there theres lots of sand , that can cause problems , but the reaserch I have done , an talked to military people say the beretta holds up well , except for them bad mags , an the FMJ ammo lacks the stopping power , thats what they tell me . again , Thanks very much for the info. an take care.
The M9 and 92FS are basically the same, other than appearance.
I love my 92FS. I purchased it primarily because I wanted a reliable full size 9mm semi-auto for target practice at the range.
Go to the Beretta forum (berettaforum.net) and you will find many happy M9 and 92FS owners.

The M9 and 92FS are essentially the same except the triggers are different, the 92FS has a plastic trigger and the M9 is a metal trigger. The recoil rod, (I think that is what it's called, it's got the spring around the rod), is metal in the M9 and plastic in the 92FS. Those are the only differences that I could tell between the two.
For me the M9 dislike is personal. It was issued to me which means there is something better out there that I won't have. I don't like the safety mechanism, I don't like that there is one, but it's the military so it has to be private-proofed. It's too bulky a weapon for me to shoot comfortably and carry it comfortably. I used to carry it on a Safariland drop leg holster but it was too cumbersome in the Strykers and Humvees so I took to placing it on a cross-draw on my vest.
The lack of decent magazines for us was a serious issue. I had 3 that I carried and two of them were purchased by me, the last was one was one of of the silver ones I mentioned in my previous post. Ammo was really hard to get, so the amount of rounds I fired, less than 100 for the whole deployment, isn't enough to verify ammo reliability. If you keep your M9 clean, which I was very anal about, it will work all the time, pending the ammo or mag won't fail. And yes I was not happy to be carrying an 9mm. I knew the stopping power wasn't there with the 9mm and the 5.56 in my M4 was sometimes taking 2-4 rounds to drop someone with, so I was damned if I did and damned if I didn't. And during my deployment is when the military was looking towards the .45 again or the .40 S&W in a different pistol frame. So I was really looking forward to that until the military scrapped that one.
The like and dislike of the pistol goes back to the same root with all pistols, can you shoot it well, shoot it comfortably, carry it comfortably, does it go bang when you pull the trigger, and personal preference. I shot it well and it always went bang for me. If you're happy with the M9, more power to you, it ain't my cup of tea. I hope this helps answer your questions.:)

It`s called a guide rod and the one in my M9 was made of plastic. Replaced it with a stainless steel rod from Steve Bedair. It certainly takes more than 100 rds to get used to the M9 but once you get familiar with it you`ll realize that it`s a very accurate and reliable pistol.

That's what it's called, thank you. For the life of me I couldn't remember the name of the part. I heard that some of the earlier production M9s had the plastic guide rod and they were breaking because of age and usage. They started putting the metal guide rods in the later production ones. The one I was issued was brand spanking new and had the metal guide rod.
I wish I did get more rounds than I did with my M9. It was accurate and reliable when I did shoot it, so I'm not unhappy. I just didn't prefer the bulk and grip when compared to what else is out there these days. It's over 20 years old in design and with todays technology and new pistol designs with reduction in weight and adjustable grip sizes you'd think the military would look to something else. But the cost is less to keep the M9 and to renew the contract with Beretta. So what can ya do?

TG , I can understand how feel about the 9mm , my father an one of his Brothers was in combat WW11 Europe , an his oldest brother was A ww1 vet. in europe to , they like somthing to do the job , when I was A kid years ago my Father told me stories about how the GI's like the big 45 pistol , over the German Luger , which was A fine pistol to but didnt have the stopping power , like the 45 acp. , but again that was then with ball ammo , the 9 mm has come A long ways with JHP AN +P , still not A 45 but for target about half price of ammo as the bigger calibers.

I don't have an issue with 9mm ammo, just the 9mm ammo I was issued. That's why I was really praying for the larger pistol caliber to be adopted. I actually plan on a HK P30 for my next pistol. We weren't allowed to have anything other than issue ammo in our weapons like JHPs. Why? Apparently its inhumane to shoot people with a JHP and kill them with one round as opposed to multiple rounds and a prolonged death. Go figure. I agree, 9mm is cheaper and fun to plink with. Anyway, good luck with your pistola. :)
