I noticed on SA's main site that for 2008, XD's will be available with frame-mounted, ambidextrous thumb safeties.

I wandered around the site a bit but couldn't get much more. Anyone know about this?

It's a great option but now re-kindles my FNP-45 v. XD 45 struggle.

Here's a link to the picture from SA:

Dang. That makes 4 safeties now.

Trigger, grip, firing pin, and thumb safety. I guess it makes people who like thumb safeties more comfortable in choosing the pistol.

I learned to shoot on a DA revolver. In my mind, that's all the safety you need. That's why I've been leaning toward the FNP in .45 (it's DA/SA).

However, I've fired XD's and they're very natural to me. Very accurate reliable.

For concealed carry I want either a DA or a manual safety. That's why XD's were out for me. With the manual (thumb) safety, they inched back in.

I really don't have any faith in (and would rather NOT have) grip safeties and "trigger safeties". The more parts, the more parts that can fail.

That's why I think I'm still going with the FNP.

Still, if this development got my attention, I figured other board members might be interested, as well, especially since it's ambidextrous. It IS a good development (IMHO).
