View Full Version : New to me, Ruger Mark II
I Bought a Ruger Mark II from a friend last night. He's been wanting to sell it for awhile and I tried to resist but the pressure finally got to me.
It's the Competition Target model in SS with the 6 7/8 inch slab sided barrel. Came with the original hard plastic case, scope base and rings, 2 mags and 2 sets of target grips, one left handed and one right handed. I stripped it down last night and it looks like it has not been fired too much at all. My friend had purchased the gun about 6 months ago from a guy he knew. Since he got it, he only fired 10 rounds through it just to check function. I checked the serial number on it and found it was made in 1998.
What do you guys think of these guns? Anything in particular that I should watch out for? What is the accuracy like on these? Any ammo you would reccommend or is there any I should steer clear of?
Sorry for all the questions but I know practically nothing about these.
Good choice, Rugmar. I don't currently own own, though I've fired hundreds of rounds through one, and would like to get one. The only one of your questions I can speak to is accuracy: it should be excellent. I've heard very few reports of people being unhappy with the shooting performance of their Mark II's or Mark III's. I believe that these Rugers are among the 2 or 3 most accurate .22's you can buy under $500 (some other contenders would be some S&W models, Browning Buckmark, and the CZ Kadet).
Can you post pics?

The MKII guns are some fun, accurate shooters. I have the MK III but most prefer the MKII for one reason or another. Mine's really reliable and have had probably 1000rds downrange without a cleaning.
My brothers MKII had some issues when he first got it but after putting a
Volquartson extractor in it his problems cleared up.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Thanks for the info timlt. Here are a couple of pics. I am a terrible camera operator and this one being SS isn't easy at all. Flash just wants to bounce off. Oh well, glad I don't have to make a living with my photos.
Wow! I just went over to my buddies house and put about fifty rounds through this thing. I totally demolished a coke can. Started out about thirty yds. Banged it time and time again till it was a good fifty yds out and was still knocking the heck out of it.
I'll probably never go shooting again without this gun.

Very nice score you made in getting this one.
I think you will eventually will get bored with it and should send it imediately to me so as to avoid boredom with:
-Unbelieveable accuracy that will let you hit whatever you can see
-Utter reliability (be sure to clean every 5000 rounds or so just to wake up the dust bunnies)
-Tired fingers from reloading mags, pulling triggers and waving to your fans at the range.
So you can see, you will be doing yourself a great favor by just sending the gun to me as soon as you can. I promise to protect you from it
LOL. ok gunrun, I'll put you on top of the list to get this when I'm bored with it. Don't hold your breath though cause it could be quiet some time before that happens. After the smile it put on my face the other day I can't wait for springtime. Longer, warmer days means more trips to the range you know.

Congratulations Rugmar! I'm glad to see you decided to pick up that gun. I told you you'd like it :D I love mine! It's accurate, reliable to a fault, and just plain FUN to shoot. The only thing that isn't fun is tearing your fingers raw when you re-load it  As I mentioned mine is a 1983 model w/o the bull barrel so yours will be alot easier to shoot at distances. Didn't you mention that it also had a trigger job? If it does you've definitely got one up on me (besides the super cool slab sides)
You picked up a NICE looking pistol !!! The last time I saw you I know you were "on the fence" about it, I'm glad you decided it to get it, you REALLY won't regret buying it or leave home without it ;) and you will shoot the heck out of it just because it's plain FUN and awesome to practice with.
The only thing I would warn you about it the disassembly/reassembly process.... TAKE HEED!!!!! The Mark II is a MONSTER P.I.T.A to reassemble after cleaning :angry::angry: I don't know WHY in the world Ruger made a pistol that you have to turn upside down, flick back and forth, and swear ALOT to fit the slide back in. I don't think I'll be taking mine apart again EVER (and by the way, if you put it back together wrong, you can damage the firing pin and/or permanently damage the chamber....) You have been warned
Print out some targets from www.mytargets.com and show us some of what your new toy can do :) try the "tennis ball game"
