Alright folks, for those who carry,do you carry extra magazines for your pistol when on the move? Just a thought that came up as i go for my class on the 19th of this month. Practice, Practice.
mosin:D
My CCW is a Glock 27. The standard mag is 9rds plus one in the chamber. But, my standard is Glock's +2 mag plus one in the chamber for a total of 12rds. I always carry an extra Glock 15rd standard mag for the Glock 22, which I carried during LEO days. Bottom line ...12rds in the pistol plus extra mag w/15rds equals grand total of 27rds for my standard carry. As Clint Smith says ...he's never talked to someone who'd been in a gunfight who said they'd brought too much ammo to the fight.

Not usually. I used to when carrying a 1911. The single stacks were easier to conceal by far and having an extra 16 rounds was nice. I carried a spare speedloader when I carried a .38. Now I've got 16 rounds already in the pistol and I've yet to have a magazine malfunction out of my duty weapon.
I'm not saying it isn't a good idea to carry a spare, I just don't do it any longer.
Always! Normally, two spares for a 1911. Sometimes another two in my 511 vest. If clothing dictates a smaller weapon, I still always have at least one spare magazine.
While I hope I will never need to fire in self-defense, I don't ever want to be wishing I had more ammo.

You bet. Cheap life insurance.

When I can, yes. Mainly when the weather allows me to carry a shoulder holster or wear a belly band.
However, when it's really hot and a pocket pistol is the only practical option, the spares are no longer practical for me.
I'm always carrying an extra magazine, whether I'm carrying my P3-AT or my M&P 40.

You got a great x-mas gift. I just bought me a XD Sub-compact 9MM and love it; for a sub it is pretty darn accurate.

When I carry my .45 Para Ordnance Carry 12 (12+1), I typically don't carry an extra mag with me. I've seriously considered it, but since I already feel like I'm wearing the Bat Utility Belt between my Leatherman multi-tool and smartphone weak-side, and the .45 strong side, I opt not to. I also feel confident in my ability to draw, and accurately place rounds on my target, so 12+1 feels about right to me.
Granted, 12+1 isn't going to get me out of a SHTF scenario, but should be adequate for most situations I could expect to find myself in.

I carry a Walther PPKS, so I always carry an extra magazine since 7 rnd clips of 380 isn't a whole lot.
I have heard arguments that you don't need to carry extra mags because typical "gunfights" are 7 shots or less, but I like to be on the safe side.

I read somewhere that it's all over at 2 shots fired, maybe 1 from you and 1 from slimebag. So,if you think you may need extra mags, chances are you won't as slimbag has won the shootin match:blink: Practice.Practice.

That is a good point, nothing can beat being prepared and knowing your gun.

Secondary: Keltec P11, one magazine (No spare)

Uncle Jerky, I'd have to disagree on that point.
Even the normal police officer, in a life-or-death scenario, will only hit 20% of their rounds. The opponent is probably going to be scared for his life, being shot at. The adrenaline will keep him going beyond a single hit. He may not feel any pain at all, and he won't bleed much until he starts to cools down. Critial shots are important. That is of course, only if he is seriously scared. Maybe drugs limit or prevent this fear? I have no idea.
(However, the officers that practice force-on-force training such as simunitions, hit 90% of their shots.)

Agreed but in a different manner. It is all about hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Most defensive shootings occur at a range of approximately 7yds. and on average, each person involve shoots on average of 3 rounds. You need to keep in mind though that CCW is not all about getting stuck-up at an ATM...it's also about SHTF and being prepared for anything. If the weather is really hot, I will typically carry a G26 in an ankle holster with a pair of jeans and a tank top or comfy T-shirt (I don't wear huge T-shirts and I'm skinny so if there's no jacket, usually no waist carry). I may also drop a spare 17rd. mag in my pocket. If I don't, I still have spare mags in the car. Why? If things get seriously bad and I need to ditch my car and trek home 10 miles with streets lined with panic striken sheeple, I want to be able to hold my own and have plenty to spare. E&E is great but some situations don't allow for it. Of course this goes along with the territory of situational awareness and preparedness and keeping a get home bag in your trunk, etc. I hope this helps.

Hey Ruger, where'd those stats come from?

Having a spare mag is not just about extra ammo its also about having a spare ammo feeding device. Even a high quality mag can get jammed up with a grain of sand in the right place.

Huh. I read On Killing and own On Combat, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

With my luck, a gunfight would anything but typical. I wish someone made an extra capacity mag for the PPKS.

FWIW, the stats discussed are on page 104 of the paperback. Otherwise, it's at the end of Sect. II, Chapter 4, second sub-heading (Perseveration).
It's a good book, but the way it's organized and indexed makes tracking down specifics very difficult.

Nope, I carry an extra gun. ;)
I do carry spare mags in the vehicle, but not on me.

I prefer the Glock 27 its light and easy to carry plus it just fits my hand. I usally carry 2 extra mags loaded with gold dots .In my gun I carry Extreme shock fang face and enhanced pentatration. I also have a box of some FMJ's in my car just incase I may have a chance to do some target shooting.
In the past I didn't carry extra mags. Now I 'd say it is foolish not to carry an additional mag when practical.

ALWAYS... then again, I am one of those nuts who clings to his gun and his Bible...
Double stack .45 (13+1) and 2 spare mags, plus a KelTec P3AT in case one of you shows up and forgot to bring your equipment ;)
