I bought this SKS about 7 years ago and put in the gun safe. I've never fired it. In a recent gun cleaning session I pulled her out to give her a good look over and thought.....you know what I know nothing about this thing.
So below is what it says on the rifle so maybe someone can give me a quick education. I paid 140 bucks for it if I remember right.

Nice Yugo. I have one and love it. I removed the grenade launcher, it's sight, the bayonet and cut back the barrel to standard SKS length. I then replaced the rear sight with a Williams aperture type. I have the parts ordered for my quick detach tac sling. Just about perfect for me with the 20 round Tapco mag in it.
Just keep in mind your Yugo is a C&R (Curio & Relic) rifle, almost anything you do to modify it will require you to play the '10' game to remain legal.
What is it you need/want to know. I have learned a ton about these in the last 10 months or so. I am no expert but can tell or point you in the right direction for almost anything you may want to know.
Important points of SKS;
1. Matching numbers (including stock)
2. Shiny, Clean bore
3. Tight fitting gas valve (no slop)
I paid $189 for my unissued 10 months or so ago and a little over $80 for my Yubba (modified Yugo) from a friend that needed the cash in a hurry. $140 7 years ago doesn't sound like a bad deal, but not necessarily a great one either. My unissued was an arsenal refurb that was in absolutely pristine condition right down to the 15 pounds of cosmoline I had to clean out of it to shoot it.
I have found that an excellent resource for info and suggestions is Survivor's SKS Boards (http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php). LEShwartz over there is the resident genius when it comes to legal issues, and most of the member's I've interacted with have some excellent suggestions and stories about what does/doesn't work.

Very nice looking Yugo. Are you missing the magazine or was it removed for your cleaning session? +1 on the recommendation to check out http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php plus here's a few more you might find interesting:

Thanks for the info guys. I did recieve a 5 round mag with it. I need to figure out a 30 round mag though.
I'm pretty much curious about the history of the rifle. Like I said I know nothing about it. I'll be checking out the links you guys supplied though.
Thanks fellas

The simonov link is a good place to start for history. As for the magazine. If your 10 rounder is gone the rifle is already in violation of sec. 922r, and you need to play (the '10' game) to correct it ASAP.
Basically the '10' game goes like this;
The BATFE recognizes the following 15 imported parts on the Yugo SKS.
1. Receiver.
2. Barrel.
3. Muzzle attachment.
4. Bolt.
5. Bolt carrier.
6. Gas piston.
7. Trigger housing.
8. Trigger.
9. Hammer.
10. Sear.
11. Disconnector.
12. Buttstock.
13. Forearm/handguard.
14. Magazine body.
15. Follower.
In order to remain legal once removed from C&R status you must remove/replace 5 parts so that your rifle contains no more than 10 'imported' parts. The magazine counts as 2 as the original 10 rounder doesn't have a floor plate.
The '10' game is sort of complex and is an exercise in subtraction. It doesn't matter how many US parts go on the rifle, 5 parts must come off. More info and clearer description is available at the sksboards.
Also the general consensus seems to be, that most after market SKS magazines except the 'USA' brand and 'TAPCO' brand are junk that will need some minor to major tinkering to get them to work if they ever work at all.
I have a couple of TAPCO's for my rifle and they work flawlessly.

This is all very interesting. After looking at the mag think it might be 10 rounds but I've never shoved rounds in it before. I'm having a hard time adding photos to the thread but I'll keep trying
