Hello, I'm looking to have a barrel replaced on my mini-14. I live on the San Francisco peninsula and I need to find a gun smith within at least 100 miles that won't rip me off for everything I'm worth. There is one local shop that I know of, but they have a reputation for being far overpriced on everything. I go to school in LA and I visit Bass lake quite a bit and I know smithies in both those areas that would do it for me, but the logistics of getting the weapon to them and getting back to pick it up are a little too crazy.
So if anyone has any experience with smiths in the Bay Area I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't know about the distance, but he is a good ar mechanic as far as I know. He has an excellent rep and is well known for his creative abilities to get around any problem with quality.

UPS is your friend
Ship it out for repairs, and have it shipped right back to your door. At least under federal laws that's how it's done. I don't know how things operate behind the redwood curtain however (commifornastan)

George did all the work on assembling my FN-FAL back prior to the latest assault weapon ban. He works on Mini-14s, ARs, FALs, Springfields and more.
I don't know if he's still in business, it's been years since I spoke with him. You can tell him that the guy with the Claro Walnut FN-FAL he assembled in 1999 sent you.

I wouldn't take it to anyone in the Bay Area. Best bet would be to ship it to Gun Doc or ASI and have them replace it and ship it back to you. This can all be done without going through an FFL. Frank at Tabors is a good gun smith, but you will pay for it and he is not as specialized with a mini as many out of state are.
There is a guy called M24 armorer on Calguns, who has a good reputation and is down in Los Gatos. You might want to check with him and see what he says.
