My son got his frist deer. We got to lay and watch her for about 10 min. before he toook the shot. 120 yds. with a .260 129 grain hand load that he loaded him self. What a great day!

Thanks guys. Sure is fun taking your kids hunting. Makes it even more when it’s their first one of anything. When we were walking over to his doe, a broken horn 4 point came running out of the trees behind where he dumped his doe so I busted him. We had both deer down right there. The funny thing is, when I took my daughter out for her first deer, kind of the same thing happened. She shot a little buck and as we started to make our way over to it, another ran out. Awesome when a plan comes together. :D

My little girl, 10, missed a good buck last year. I shot a 6 pt and if I would have sat in my stand a few more minutes I could have shot the big buck too! She saw a doe this year but wanted to wait for a buck again.;)

Tell your son great job! What a thrill that is to get the first one. I'm originally from Nebraska too. One of my nephews just started hunting the last year or two, and he's been having a lot of fun getting wild turkey (and this year, a deer) with his bow. He's even been dressing and preparing all the meat himself. Truly one of the joys of living in the Midwest!

BTW, what kind of rifle is that .260? I can't tell from the pic.

What kinda stock is that, on the .260?

That rifle is a Remington 700 26” bbl with a Choate stock. It’s a heavy one, but a tack driver. Not a rifle to carry around. I like to use it with 58 gr. Hollow points or 95 gr. V-max calling coyotes when I’m not using my Bushmaster Varminter, but the kids love it for deer.

Do you load everything you shoot through that 260, or have you also tried some factory ammo? I'm curious what kind of accuracy you've gotten out of it, if you've had a chance to test it.

timlt, I reload everything for it. You can’t get to many different factory loads for the 260, or at least I haven’t found many. I mostly just load Serra 85 grain HP’s and 95 grain V-max and the kids load 129 Hornndy. The best powder I’ve found for it is BL-C2. I haven’t put it on paper over 100 yards, but at that range if I do my part, I can make the holes touch. I have shot prairie dogs and a few coyotes way out with it and haven’t had any trouble making hits. I’ll have to get it on paper out there at 300 or so when it warms up and see what it can do.
