Congratulations on harvesting your first hog with the Mini-14--I'm sure there will be many more to follow!

What ammo did you use?

Thanks! I used the Brown Bear .233 , 62 gr soft point. I've shot other hogs but usually with other larger calibers. I plan on being back out there this weekend to chase them some more.

how about whacking one with the M30 and report on effectiveness?

I will be using the mini 30 this weekend. My daughter will be packing the mini 14 so hopefully we will have something to report. I know the mini 30 will do a great job since those wolf 154 gr. sp. act like Nosler Partitions since they have steel in the bullet themselves. A magnet will stick to the bullet is why I know. They do open up some due to the 1 1/2" hole they leave exiting deer. Just my limited observation.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to kill another hog with the mini 30 last week. I ended up just taking the mini14 again and I did get another hog and she was about 150 lbs. Another well placed shot dropped in her tracks shot. I did recover the jacket on the offside rib and I am sure I'm flirting with dissaster with these bullets with core seperation issues. I may go back to the black hills ammo. On the 3 animals this year all dropped in their tracks but no exits. Not even the deer. Those thing must explode.

:)Wendal-do you reload or have access to someone who does? There are a few better bullets out there for the 223 if you can reload.:)

I do have the equipment, I just haven't bought any dies yet. I would be using Nosler Partitions if they weren't $25 a box. These Mini's eat alot of ammo at the range so I would be poor if i used it like I do the cheap stuff. In most of Texas the deer are not very big and the std 60gr bullets usually do quite well but now I have moved to another ranch and the deer are bigger and the hogs are huge. I may just have to break out one of my real big game guns 30.06 or something. I just kinda got away from the usual tack driver bolt guns and got out and started getting closer to game and it has be more rewarding. The Mini 30 will be fine for what I need, I just have been experimenting with the .223.

;)Speer makes a 70grn .224 bullet called a semi point that seems to penetrate well ,and is cheaper than the noslers!
